Effects of sustainable soil fertility management practices on maize income in rural Zambia
We study the impacts of sustainable soil fertility management (SFM) practices – animal manure, minimum tillage, and improved fallows, on maize income per hectare in Zambia. Using data from 1,210 rural households, we use debiased/double machine learning (DML) to estimate average treatment effects (ATE) – the expected impact if all farmers adopted a practice – and effects on the treated (ATT), reflecting the actual benefit realised by current adopt…
From charcoal to clean cooking
Understanding household energy choices and behaviors is essential for advancing clean cooking transitions in Africa. This study analyzes urban household cooking energy profiles in Lusaka, Zambia, and Lilongwe, Malawi, two rapidly urbanizing capitals with rising electricity access. Drawing on household survey data, we explore fuel usage patterns, appliance choices and usage, and the drivers of energy choices. Findings reveal persistent fuel stacki…
Impact of Zambia’s farmer input support program E-voucher system on smallholder farmers’ food security
Farm input subsidy programs (FISP) are a common policy tool to cushion food insecurity in many sub-Saharan African countries. This study sought to evaluate effects of Zambia’s FISP e-voucher system on food security for smallholder households in terms of months of adequate household food provisions and dietary diversity, using propensity score matching and difference-in-differences techniques. Although the program’s objective is to improve food se…
