  • Managing and navigating Manchester's Privately Owned Public Spaces

Open Access•Eleni Kanellopoulou, Nikos Ntounis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Management•2026

This paper explores the processes of understanding publicness in the management of Privately Owned Public Spaces (POPS), in the context of a rapidly developing city in the UK (Manchester). By adopting a pluralistic approach that applies legal geography in place management literature in the context of POPS, we explore the intricacies of managing these spaces from the perspective of estate managers. Taking an ‘outside-in’ perspective to the complex…

  • Chronotopic ruptures

Open Access•Nikos Ntounis, James Scott Vandeventer et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2026•References: 46

This paper addresses the question of how the spatiotemporal processes of urban assemblages can be understood in the context of a controversial urban squat. We mobilise concepts of time and temporality and employ the notion of the chronotope as a methodological frame to rethink the politics of change in urban contexts. Our multi-temporal, chronotopic analysis centres on Avtonomna Tovarna Rog , a squat in Ljubljana (Slovenia) that was forcibly demo…

The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of intergenerational play on grandparents and children relationship according to the teachers' and grandparents' point of view during the traditional playing. It is claimed that traditional games improve relationships within the family and strengthen the bond between children and grandparents. Grandparents (n = 83) participated in their grandchildren's play (n = 100) for an hour daily during the …

  • A Chronotopic Evaluation of Autonomous Rog

    Open Access•Eleni Kanellopoulou, Nikos Ntounis•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 13

The paper explores an urban squat in Ljubljana, Slovenia, following a chronotopic narrative approach. Urban squats often represent a manifestation of alternative notions of who belongs where, when, and why, questions that matter when issues pertaining to their legal status are raised. We examine the case of Autonomous Rog, a formerly squatted bike factory area in the city centre of Ljubljana that the Supreme Court of Slovenia described as “quasi-…

  • Normalising jurisdictional heterotopias through place branding

    Open Access•Nikos Ntounis, Eleni Kanellopoulou•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 72

This paper explores the political dimensions of place branding as a path to normalisation for areas where a paradoxical relationship with the law exists, places that we coin "jurisdictional heterotopias" borrowing from Foucauldian literature. We posit that place branding plays a fundamental role in facilitating scale jumping in the otherwise vertically aligned legal space, a hierarchy designed to exclude spatial multiplicity from its premise. By …
