  • On Folklore Archives and Heritage Claims

    Open Access•Svetlana Jacquesson•ARTICLE•Journal of the Economic and…•2021•References: 8

In this article I focus on the importance of folklore archives in staking heritage claims and in disputes over cultural “ownership.” I use as a case study the Manas epic which is shared by post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan and China’s Kyrgyz minority. By analyzing the actors who took part in the transcription of the epic, the conditions under which these transcriptions were conducted, and the results they yielded, I show how, in the case of Kyrgyzstan, turn…

  • Claiming heritage

    Open Access•Svetlana Jacquesson•ARTICLE•Central Asian Survey•2020•Cited by: 4

In this article I argue that the renewed promotion of the Manas epic in Kyrgyzstan after 2010 should not be reduced to an attempt to consolidate a national identity or strengthen the state by endorsing ethno-nationalism. Instead, since the 2009 inscription of the Manas epic on the UNESCO List of Intangible Heritage by China, Kyrgyzstan has undertaken a full-scale heritagization not only of the Manas epic but also of its other tangible or intangib…

  • The Time of Dishonour

Svetlana Jacquesson•ARTICLE•Journal of the Economic and…•2012•Cited by: 1

In this article I try to uncover the reasons for false accusations of murder, instigated murders, and staged murders among the Tian Shan Kyrgyz under Russian colonial rule. Towards this end, I read, contrapuntally, field data, ethnohistorical accounts, colonial statutory laws, and colonial ethnography. I argue that colonial interventions—namely, the hybrid adjudication of murders, the newly designed system of self-government, and the imposition o…

  • From clan narratives to clan politics

    Svetlana Jacquesson•ARTICLE•Central Asian Survey•2012•Cited by: 10•References: 4

This essay focuses on clan narratives as cultural tools in a particular sociocultural setting where mass literacy meets mass media. It shows how the interactions between different producers of clan narratives – the news media, the academic establishment and an intellectualist movement for the recovery of Kyrgyz history and culture – have resulted in a profound reshaping of the content of clan genealogies, of the claims of their compilers and, mor…

  • Reforming pastoral land use in Kyrgyzstan

    Svetlana Jacquesson•ARTICLE•Central Asian Survey•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 5

The question of pastoral land use in colonial Central Asia is set against the goals and assumptions of present-day laws and regulations in Kyrgyzstan. In order to highlight the main choices of the colonial administration and their consequences on the local level the analysis is focused on three dyads: territorial divisions versus clan divisions, ownership versus administration and administration versus self-government. By pointing out that the co…

  • The Sore Zones of Identity

    Svetlana Jacquesson•ARTICLE•Inner Asia•2008

Identity has been approached in a number of ways but the analyses have usually been centred on the interactions among the living. In this paper I address the question: Does identity play a role when the living pay their respects to the deceased? I argue that the answer is 'yes' in the Kyrgyz case. The paper explores the past and present debates on Kyrgyz funerary practices and focuses more particularly on what could be called, following Herzfeld …
