The New Jersey Death Penalty Abolition Movement (DPAM) developed a pragmatic strategy that effectively communicated the argument for replacing capital punishment with life without parole, and the state of New Jersey repealed the death penalty by legislative action, on December 17, 2007. This case study analyzes the issue frames and messages used by the movement, and the possible lessons for movements in other states working to repeal the death pe…

  • Meltdown of the Public Interest and the Need for an Engaged Public Sphere

    Open Access•Ken Cunningham, Holly Angelique•ARTICLE•Humanity & Society•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 21

We argue the need for a national public debate re-assessing the nuclear industry in light of recent Bush Administration initiatives for expansion of the nuclear industry in the US, and expressed support for nuclear power by Barack Obama. Specifically, we use a critical theoretical lens to re-examine the worst nuclear accident in US history at the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear power plant in 1979. Ken Cunningham•ARTICLE•New Political Science•2004•Cited by: 5

Although there is an expanding body of excellent work on 9/11 and the War on Terror, and the changing forms of war-making, militarism and imperialism, this literature lacks a sufficient critical synthesis of the historical and conjunctural events of 9/11 and its aftermath with the structural and systemic forms of US militarism and the military-industrial complex. This article attempts a broad, critical-theoretical analysis of the increased domest…

  • True Confessions of an Eight-Year-Old Warrior

    Open Access•Ken Cunningham•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Within the post-9/11 context of more aggressive, preemptive U.S. foreign policy, the author gives an autoethnographic account of growing up absorbed with war within the American culture of violence of the Vietnam period. Childhood fantasies and enactments of violence and destruction in the playing of war games and football are juxtaposed with print media accounts of "real war." The article offers critical theoretical reflections on the lived expe…

  • A Critical Theory of the “Rationality” of US Foreign Policy

    Ken Cunningham•ARTICLE•New Political Science•2002•References: 5

The attacks of September 11th, 2001, have increased the urgency of understanding the relationship between war-making and political culture. This essay uses Frankfurt School critical theory to analyze the development of the increasing “rationalization” of US foreign policy during the Cold War, focusing heuristically on the case of the US war in Vietnam. Particularly developing a Habermasian reading of these phenomena, the essay argues that, despit…
