  • Chains of closure

    Open Access•Mark Liebenrood•ARTICLE•Museum History Journal•2026

Hundreds of museums have closed in the UK since 2000. Some closures have led to the transfer of part or all of the collection to another museum which has later also closed, causing collections to move again. These repeated endings are described here as chains of closure, and some involve multiple museums in succession. Not only do collections move, but objects can also be transformed in the process, with results ranging from modification to decay…

  • Unrealized Fears

Open Access•Mark Liebenrood, Andrea Ballatore et al.•ARTICLE•Curator The Museum Journal•2026

Fears of widespread permanent closures of museums expressed at the start of the COVID‐19 pandemic prompted our research to monitor closures and other museum behavior in 2021–2022. We wanted to understand how the UK sector changed in this period. Which museums closed, and what factors were at work in their closure? Did museums that closed have anything in common? Were there trends or patterns across the sector? To monitor as widely as possible we …

  • Museum Closure in the UK

    Open Access•Mark Liebenrood•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2024

Museum closure has received little attention within museum studies. Not only is there scant understanding about how museums close, but so far little has been published about which museums have closed in the UK, and much of what has been published lacks detailed analysis. In this article I set out the best available data on museum closure between 1960 and 2022, using the Mapping Museums dataset. I analyse that data to show patterns of closure in a…

  • The UK museum boom

Fiona Candlin, Andrea Ballatore et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Trends•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 4

During the late-twentieth century there was a significant increase in the number of museums in the UK. Apart from the polemic heritage debates of the 1980s and 1990s, the boom in museums was not much investigated. Our project “Mapping Museums” collected and analysed data on over 4000 UK museums that were open in the period from 1960 to 2019. Here we present our findings. We show that the number of museums increased from around 1000 to a highpoint…
