A Set of Miniature Mugs From Poieneşti (Romania)
At the Roman-period site of Poieneşti-Măgură (Vaslui County, Romania), an unusual ceramic deposit (pit 1759a) was found, consisting of five small mugs. Unlike typical funerary contexts, this deposit — located at the southern boundary of the Poieneşti-Vвrteşcoiu necropolis — lacks human remains, suggesting a non-funerary yet deliberate function. The vessels, carefully arranged and technologically refined, reflect influences from Greco-Roman and «b…
Technological studies of ancient mirrors from East of the Carpathians in nomadic and neighbouring environments
This paper presents an analysis of a representative collection of ancient mirrors from the western border of the Great Steppe (modern-day eastern Romania). Using X-ray Fluorescence Spectrophotometry, nine mirrors with diverse shapes and decorations were examined. The results revealed significant variations in alloy composition, indicating different networks of production and material sourcing. The variation in the proportions of copper, tin, and …
On the edge of the eurasian steppes
The paper analyses the Sarmatian culture east of the Carpathians during the 1st-3rd centuries AD, shedding light on their burial practices, artefacts, and socio-economic interactions. The term ‘Sarmatians’ encompasses several nomadic groups with common genetic, linguistic or territorial ties, including the Iazyges, Roxolani, Alans, Siraces and Aorsi. Archaeological evidence indicates significant cultural changes during the Middle and at the begin…
Reflections in time

Taking from the dead
The phenomenon of intensive grave disturbance of the Carpathian Basin graves in the Antiquity is especially associated with the Sarmatian cemeteries, dated to between the first and early fifth centuries CE. In this paper, this phenomenon was investigated in 20 cemeteries (179 graves) from the Banat region (East Serbia and West Romania). Analyses showed that more than half of the graves in the Banat were reopened, without any regional or inter-sit…
Glass Beads Discovered in the Sarmatian Cemeteries From South-Western Romania
This paper analyses the glass beads discovered in the cemeteries attributed to the Sarmatian culture from South-Western Romania, especially Foeni-Cimitirul Ortodox (Timiş county), Giarmata — Sit 10 (Timiş county) and Hunedoara Timişană (Arad county). Beads are the most numerous objects identified among grave goods (over 14000 specimens), being present in 43 cemeteries dated between the 2nd and the 4th century AD. Nevertheless, their number diffe…
The Sarmatian Discoveries From Ripiceni – La Stâncă (Botoșani County/Ro)
The present paper aims to analyse two graves and other stray finds dated to the Roman period and discovered in 1979 and 1983 in the site of Ripiceni – La Stâncă (Botoșani County/RO). Grave 1 belongs to an adult female (around 55-60 years old) with the skull intentionally deformed in the first years after her birth. The calvaria of the deceased no. 2 (a child around 2-3 years old) had also traces of artificial deformation. The morphology of both s…
Corpus of the Roman Finds in the European Barbaricum. Romania 1
The goal of this paper is to present the Roman products found in Arad County (West Romania), to analyse the Roman-Dacians connections, and the avenues by which the Roman goods made their way into the Dacian world, west of the Carpathians. Excluding the coins, Italian goods are sporadically found in Dacian sites dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD : some fragmentary bronze and glass vessels, terra sigillata , and various ceramic p…
Settlements From the 2nd-Early 5th Century Ad in Banat (I). State of Research and the Interpretation of the Discoveries From Romania
The present paper was based on 351 settlements identified in the archaeological literature throughout the highland and lowland areas of the Banat, dated between the 2nd century and the beginning of the 5th century AD.
