  • A Pack of Hounds and its Master? A Bi-Species Burial from the Necropolis of Deir El-Banat (Fayum)

    Open Access•Galina Belova, G A Belova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeofauna•2024•Referencias: 7

Dog burials are known from Egypt from the Predynastic period from c. 3500 BC onward and continue into the Roman era. Different burials have been interpreted in a variety of ways: companion/pet/working animals, associated with divinities, and as guardians. This paper presents a unique interment of a single human and a group of dogs found in the cemetery of Deir el-Banat in the Fayum (Egypt), which can be interpreted as either a religio-magical pro…

  • Stable-Isotope Analysis as a Method of Taxonomical Identification of Archaeozoological Material

    Open Access•Ekaterina N Gorlova, O A Krylovich et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2015•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 51

The paper discusses the possibility of using carbon isotope composition (ratio of 13 C /12 C ) and nitrogen isotope composition (ratio of 15 N /14 N ) for taxonomic diagnostics of animal bone remains from archaeological sites and other ancient deposits. The world literature pertaining to the use of stable-isotope analysis (SIA) in animal trophic ecology and methodological difficulties of work with subfossil material are reviewed. Several particul…

  • Nitrogen Isotope Composition of Peat Samples as a Proxy for Determining Human Colonization of Islands

    Arkady B Savinetsky, B F Khasanov et al.•ARTICLE•Arctic Anthropology•2014

The Aleutian Islands comprise a unique ecosystem, providing nesting grounds and habitat for more than ten million seabirds. No doubt their numbers were even larger prior to the introduction of foxes and rats, invasive species that have shaped the current population sizes and distributions of bird-breeding colonies. Here we present evidence that the peopling of the Aleutian Islands had the same dramatic effect on seabird populations. Analyses of n…
