Shared Vulnerability – Collectivity and Empathy in Media Reflections of a Finnish theater Monologue FAT
This article utilizes the concept of “shared vulnerability” to analyze media reflections of a Finnish fat activist monologue FAT. In texts, pictures, and sounds on FAT, gaps between differently-sized women are stitched up and a feeling of an all-women’s community is offered as a solution to hurtful experiences. I argue that shared vulnerability can signal a welcomed realization of previously hidden privileges on the part of the more normative sub…
Enduring Emotions. Fat Time and Weight Loss in the Finnish Body Positive Podcasts Jenny and the Fat Myth Busters and The Soft

Why can’t I take a full-shot of myself? of course I can!” studying selfies as socio-technological affective practices
This article studies selfie-production as a socio-technological affective practice, bringing attention to a new and largely unstudied type of selfies, private selfies. Discussing an example of five Finnish women’s experiences with a body positive #righttobeseen campaign, the article argues for selfie scholarship to move beyond analyses of representation and image-sharing on social media platforms, if it is to understand selfies’ diverse role in s…
Affective Body Politics of Social Media

Bringing together two theoretical concepts, the notion of 'body politics' and that of 'affective politics,' we direct attention to the carnal ways in which bodies experience practices of governance, how they affect and are affected by other bodies. The introduction maps out some of the interdisciplinary voices that st…
Feel in Your Body
This article interrogates how body positive and fat activist blogs offer alternative ways of feeling one's body, using the Finnish More to Love ( MTL, 2009-2013) and its successor PlusMimmi ( PM, 2013-) and the American Queer Fat Femme Guide to Life ( QFF, 2008-) as its examples. We investigate how these blogs, despite their differences, invite their publics not only to feel positive about their own and others' norm-exceeding bodies, but to feel …
