Contingency in valuations: On the interdependence of multiple values and waste in organizations
How organizations connect to multiple values is well explored, while the role of valuelessness and waste therein remains understudied. The purpose of this article is therefore to conceptualize the interrelations among multiple values, organizations, and waste. By cross-fertilizing sociological perspectives on organizations with insights from valuation studies, we inquire into how waste arises when organizations engage with multiple values. Drawin…
Co-Designing Multispecies Speculations Through Biofuturing
Amid growing environmental concerns, there is an increasing demand for creative research approaches that address impending crises while simultaneously imagining sustainable modes for humans to coexist with nature. In response, we introduce the concept/practice of "biofuturing," a creative research approach concerned with the co-design of multispecies speculations of worlds to come. We engaged 21 scholars in a 3-day biofuturing event, combining a …
Waste in Organizations: Discerning (Dis)value in Rational, Natural, and Open Systems Perspectives
Society overflows with waste, and waste and discard studies emphasize the social construction and contingency of waste, outlining it as the negatively valued. However, organizational sociology currently does not reflect these insights and rarely accounts for waste. Therefore, this article asks what kind of theory is required to capture waste in organized contexts. By searching for waste in Scott and Davis' well-accepted three perspectives on orga…
When reactivity fails: The limited effects of hospital rankings
Recent research has advanced the idea that modern society is replete with numerous measuring activities that evaluate the performance of individuals and organisations. Both the research and the application of such measures suggest that the scrutinised actors will internalise the expectations associated with these measures and adjust their behaviour accordingly ('reactivity'). Usually these expectations involve both technical and moral demands aim…

Mafias als organisierte Dritte. Mafias as organized third parties
In the scientific debate on mafias we find neither a common usage nor a shared understanding as to what characterizes a mafia as opposed to other forms of organized crime. To clarify the mafia concept we suggest following Georg Simmel’s notion that the appearance of a third party substantively alters the constitution of a social configuration. It is our thesis that mafias act as the third party in a variety of settings by creating or sustaining s…
