Model for Drug Use Normalisation
The proposed model provides a comprehensive operationalisation that captures all dimensions and levels of the concept drug use normalisation. The model has the potential to improve conceptual clarity, support more consistent measurement, and inform future research, monitoring, prevention, and policymaking
Clusters of Emotion Regulation Strategies and Their Association with Concurrent and Long-term Alcohol Problems in University Students
Heavy Episodic Drinking (HED) among university students poses risks such as academic issues and alcohol dependence, yet the role of emotion regulation strategies in alcohol problems during life transitions remains underexplored. This study explores how clusters of emotion regulation strategies among students in their final undergraduate year or any year of a master’s programme ( n = 439) relate to alcohol problems over two years. Latent Class Ana…
From Risk to Resilience? Hazardous Drinking Trajectories in and Beyond the Last Years of University Life
In this study, we examined the effects of loneliness, social support, and stress resilience on alcohol consumption and problems among university students in their final years of education during the COVID-19 pandemic. We surveyed 437 students with a pre-pandemic history of heavy episodic drinking across five waves from February 2021 to May 2023. Our findings showed that stress resilience significantly reduced alcohol-related problems over time. T…
The longitudinal link between popularity, likeability, fear of negative evaluation and social avoidance across adolescence
This study investigated the longitudinal bidirectional associations between likeability, popularity, fear of negative evaluation, and social avoidance, to aid in preventing the negative consequences and persistent trajectories of low social status and heightened social anxiety. In total, 1741 adolescents in grades 7–9 participated at 3 yearly waves. A self‐report questionnaire measured fear of negative evaluation. Peer nominations assessed likeab…
University students' (binge) drinking during Covid-19 lockdowns
These findings give insight into significant changes in drinking behaviors among university students during the first COVID-19 lockdown. More importantly, it underscores the need to reckon vulnerable students considering drinking type and associated psychosocial variables for increasing or maintaining higher alcohol use during societal stress periods. In the present study, an unexpected at-risk group emerged among regular drinkers who increased a…
Student-, Study- and Covid-19-Related Predictors of Students’ Smoking, Binge Drinking and Cannabis Use before and during the Initial Covid-19 Lockdown in The Netherlands
Tobacco, alcohol and cannabis are commonly used among university students. However, student lives and their substance use have changed dramatically since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the impact of COVID-19 on (trends in) weekly smoking, weekly binge drinking and weekly cannabis use in Dutch university students and investigated associated student-, study- and COVID-19-related characteristics. Between April and June 2…
Associations of Regular Marijuana Use by Adolescent Boys With Verbal Memory and Perseveration
Many American and Dutch adolescents use marijuana regularly. There is concern that such use may impair cognitive function more in adolescents than adults. We examined effects of regular marijuana use on long-term memory and perseveration among American and Dutch adolescents. We administered Buschke's Selective Reminding Test (BSRT) to assess long-term memory and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) to assess perseveration in male teenagers. Usa…

Mechanisms Underlying Alcohol-Approach Action Tendencies
The tendency to approach alcohol-related stimuli is known as the alcohol-approach bias and has been related to heavy alcohol use. It is currently unknown whether the alcohol-approach bias is more pronounced after emotional priming. The main aim of this study was to investigate whether positive and negative emotional primes would modulate the alcohol-approach bias. For this purpose, a new contextual emotional prime-approach avoidance task was deve…
Tentative Evidence for Striatal Hyperactivity in Adolescent Cannabis-Using Boys
Adolescents' risk-taking behavior has been linked to a maturational imbalance between reward ("go") and inhibitory-control ("stop")-related brain circuitry. This may drive adolescent drug-taking, such as cannabis use. In this study, we assessed the non-acute effects of adolescent cannabis use on reward-related brain function. We performed a two-site (United States and Netherlands; pooled data) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study wi…
