  • Mary as Mother of the Blue Seas: An Ecotheology Proposal in Light of Climate Change

    Open Access•Arvin M Gouw•ARTICLE•Studies in World Christianity•2026

Many ecotheologians have written on climate change; this paper proposes an ecotheology of Mary as the Mother of the Seas from a maritime perspective, derived from a blue hermeneutics. In the first section, an introduction will briefly outline the impact of climate change on the seas, especially the Pacific Ocean. More importantly, this paper proposes four key criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of ecotheologies. First, an effective ecotheol…

  • Undisciplining the Science and Religion Discourse on the Holy War on Obesity

    Open Access•Arvin M Gouw•ARTICLE•Religions•2024•References: 103

Contemporary science and religion discourse (SRD) is a large field encompassing various topics, from creationism against evolution to theological anthropology and artificial intelligence, though historically, what is meant by "science" is Western science, and what is meant by "religion" is usually Christianity. Moreover, SRD has been driven mainly from the North American context. The scope of this paper will thus be more focused on Western scienc…

  • Moral Bioenhancement for Space: Should We Enhance Morally Future Deep-Space Astronauts and Space Settlers

    Konrad Szocik, Arvin M Gouw•ARTICLE•Theology and Science•2023

The idea of moral bioenhancement has been discussed in recent years by ethicists and philosophers. While such discussion covers many different issues on Earth, they have not yet been considered in the context of future human space missions. In this paper, we discuss the bioethics of biomedical moral enhancement for space whether it is possible, probable, and preferable. We show that the ethical context of moral bioenhancement for space differs fr…

  • Future space missions and human enhancement: Medical and ethical challenges

Open Access•Konrad Szocik, Mark Shelhamer et al.•ARTICLE•Futures•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 64

Future human space missions to Mars and beyond may be realized for different research, economic, political or survival reasons. Since space remains a hazardous environment for humans, space exploration and exploitation requires the development and deployment of effective countermeasures. In this paper, we discuss prospects for human enhancement by gene editing, synthetic biology, or implants, for the purposes of future space missions. We argue th…

  • Insights from complex systems: Contingency and trinitarian divine action in creation

    Arvin M Gouw•CONFERENCE•Dialogo•2015

Divine action and the contingency of creation on God have been an ongoing topic of discussion between theologians and scientists. This paper begins with an introduction on contingency by presenting two models of contingency: topdown and bottom-up contingency models (section 1). I then proceeded to make the connection between contingency and causation (section 2). With the discourse of causation, contingency can be approached starting from either …
