  • Late Upper Palaeolithic ornaments from Vlakno cave, Croatia

    Open Access•Barbara Cvitkušić, E Cristiani et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2024

This paper presents the richest prehistoric assemblage of ornaments in the Eastern Adriatic discovered to date, found in the Late Upper Palaeolithic layers of Vlakno cave, Croatia. The abundance and multiform of bead types indicate that the site was likely used as a workshop for ornaments, i.e. that production was performed on site. Technological and use-wear analysis of each taxon used for beads allowed us to elaborate on its mode of production,…

  • Prehistoric ornaments in a changing environment. An integrated approach to the Late Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Columbella rustica shells from the Vlakno cave, Croatia

    Open Access•Barbara Cvitkušić, E Cristiani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 18

This paper advances knowledge of human behavioural and adaptational strategies in coastal areas related to acquiring, producing and distributing ornaments, specifically, the omnipresent marine gastropod Columbella rustica. By applying quantitative and qualitative approaches to the most extensive collection of Columbella rustica shells in the Eastern Adriatic region discovered in the Late Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic levels of Vlakno cave in …

  • Something Old, Something New

Open Access•Mario Carić, Dinko Tresić Pavičić et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologie•2020

In this paper we present three prehistoric cases (two previously reported and one recently discovered) of trepanation from Croatia: Rudine, Bezdanjaca and Jagodnjak, all dated to the Bronze Age. By using a detailed macroscopic analysis as well as radiographic imaging (x-ray and CT scanning) of the skulls, we provide a new assessment and interpretation for this type of surgical intervention during the Bronze Age. The first case was that of an adul…

  • Changes in ornamental traditions and subsistence strategies during the Palaeolithic-Mesolithic transition in Vlakno cave

  • New research on the Late Pleistocene in the Lim Channel, Istria

Open Access•I Janković, Darko Komšo et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2017

As a part of the multidisciplinary project entitled 'Archaeological Investigations into the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene of the Lim Channel, Istria', archaeological research has been conducted at four sites: Romuald's Cave, Abri Kontija 002, Pećina at Rovinjsko Selo and Lim 001 (Figure 1). There is much debate on issues related to biological and behavioural continuity, to patterns of changes and adaptations during this crucial period, and …
