  • Circulating desire

    Open Access•Sam Mcbean•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2022•References: 7

In The Deadly Life of Logistics (2014), Deborah Cowen asks what a queer engagement with logistics space might look like. In the years following this publication, there has been an increase in interest in critical approaches to logistics, infrastructure, and supply chains, yet hardly any of this work has been taken up in queer scholarship. This article offers an analysis of Netflix's Sense8 (2015–2018), arguing that the series be read as a queer e…

  • Feminist diagrams

    Open Access•Sam Mcbean•ARTICLE•Feminist Theory•2021•References: 12

On 4 January 1971, Ti-Grace Atkinson delivered a talk entitled 'Strategy and Tactics: A Presentation of Political Lesbianism'. The talk was later published in her collected essays, Amazon Odyssey. The essay contains thirty-five diagrams: ten 'Strategy Charts', three 'Tactical Charts' and twenty-two 'Tactical-Strategy Charts', which map a strategy of the 'Oppressor' (men) and the tactics that the 'Oppressed' (women) might develop to lead to a revo…

  • Coda

    Sam Mcbean•ARTICLE•Comparative American Studies An…•2020•References: 3

This short coda reflects on the question of ‘queer form’. While ‘form’ is not a framework that was explicitly addressed at the conference which produced this special issue, I suggest that it might be a useful way to approach the articles’ various approaches to the links between queer politics and aesthetics. Finally, the coda offers a short reading of the network form and its potential relationship to queerness

  • We fuck and friends don't fuck

    Sam Mcbean•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2018

The ‘BFF’ label is often used by mainstream media to closet what are actually lesbian relationships. Responses to the misuses of the label insist that friendship is an anachronistic code that erases same-sex desire in the present. This article considers whether a different approach is possible – whether friendship might not only erase lesbian desire but might enable queer narratives. It takes as its case study MTV's Faking It (2014–2016), a half-…

  • Remediating Affect

    Sam Mcbean•ARTICLE•Journal of Lesbian Studies•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 11

This article focuses on Kaelyn and Lucy, a long distance (US-UK) lesbian couple who document their relationship on YouTube. Their channel has attracted a following of hundreds of thousands of individuals who profess to feeling an intimate attachment to the couple. This article considers how Kaelyn and Lucy's performance of lesbian intimacy online has amassed such a following. In exploring the multiple feelings that Kaelyn and Lucy's YouTube chann…

  • Feminism and Futurity

    Open Access•Sam Mcbean•ARTICLE•Feminist Review•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 36

This article considers the question of feminist futurity through Marge Piercy's Woman on the Edge of Time (1976). While dominant readings of this novel have focused on its relationship to the feminist Utopian genre and feminist theory from the 1970s, this essay aims to critically reframe the novel through contemporary feminist theorising on time and futurity. Drawing on recent feminist and queer theory that suggests that the future might most pro…

  • Seeing in Alison Bechdel's Fun Home

    Sam Mcbean•ARTICLE•Camera Obscura Feminism Culture…•2013•Cited by: 3

Alison Bechdel's autobiographical graphic novel, Fun Home (2006), intricately weaves together the author's coming-out story with her family's history, particularly the story of her father's closeted queer sexuality and possible suicide. In its exploration of family history, queer desires, and larger American historical events, Bechdel's novel deals with themes of trauma, memory, and historical narrative. The novel has been embraced for the queer …
