Analysis of Time-to-Event Data With Two Time Scales. An Application to Transitions out of Cohabitation
Models for time-to-event data are based on transition rates between states, and to define such hazards of experiencing an event, the time scale over which the process evolves needs to be identified. In many applications, however, more than one time scale might be of importance. Here, we demonstrate how to model a hazard jointly over two time dimensions. The model assumes a smooth bivariate hazard function, and the function is estimated by two-dim…
Direct Semi-Parametric Estimation of the State Price Density Implied in Option Prices
We present a model for direct semi-parametric estimation of the state price density (SPD) implied by quoted option prices. We treat the observed prices as expected values of possible pay-offs at maturity, weighted by the unknown probability density function. We model the logarithm of the latter as a smooth function, using P-splines, while matching the expected values of the potential pay-offs with the observed prices. This leads to a special case…
Secular trend of dental development in Dutch children
Many studies have established dental age standards for different populations; however, very few studies have investigated whether dental development is stable over time on a population level. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze changes in dental maturity in Dutch children born between 1961 and 2004. We used 2,655 dental panoramic radiographs of 2‐ to 16‐year‐old Dutch children from studies performed in three major cities in the Nether…
Minor gradient in mortality by education at the highest ages
Socioeconomic mortality differentials are known to exist almost universally. Many studies show a trend towards convergence with increasing age. Information about the highest ages is very rare, though
An analysis of life expectancy and economic production using expectile frontier zones
The wealth of a country is assumed to have a strong non-linear influence on the life expectancy of its inhabitants. We follow up on research by Preston and study the relationship with gross domestic product. Smooth curves for the average but also for <
Flexible smoothing with B-splines and penalties
B-splines are attractive for nonparametric modelling, but choosing the optimal number and positions of knots is a complex task. Equidistant knots can be used, but their small and discrete number allows only limited control over smoothness and fit. We propose to use a relatively large number of knots and a difference penalty on coefficients of adjacent B-splines. We show connections to the familiar spline penalty on the integral of the squared sec…
