Agroecology and Political Economy
This article examines agroecology from a political economy perspective and opens a line for an interdisciplinary approach between economics and ecology. To this end, the logic of capital in capitalist production and in peasant agriculture is analyzed along with its relationship to nature and the land. In this vein, based on the concept of the thing-process duality in capital, an attempt is made to relate the logic of capital to the economic and e…

Dancing in time: Agrarian transformation and persistence of the peasantry in ArgentinaThe persistence of the peasantry continues to be one of the main theoretical concerns of the agrarian question in the twenty-first century. Contrary to those who predict its disappear-ance, Santiago del Estero, a peripheral province of Argentina, maintains an agrarian struc-ture with almost 68 percent of peasant farms. These figures are accentuated in some depar…

Agricultural holdings with undefined boundaries, communal systems and counter-hegemonies
The presence of agricultural holdings with undefined boundaries (AHUBs) and their heterogeneous geographical distribution questions the supposed hegemony of agribusiness in Argentina. Given the lack of defined boundaries, these holdings generate a communal culture among dwellers, which is reflected in both the strategies of the use of commons and the initiatives for the defence of land in the conflicts between peasants and entrepreneurs. This art…
Tensions around Land Tenure in Argentina’s Agrarian Periphery
This article contributes to discussions on capitalist transformation and impact on peripheral agriculture by focusing on the province of Santiago del Estero in northern Argentina. The concept of land grabbing is useful for qualitative analysis of the recent dynamics in the land market in this peripheral territory, where the concentration of land for agrarian use is historical but has accelerated in recent decades with the expansion of soybean cul…

Family farming in agrarian Argentina: a contribution to the debate about the future of peasantryThe academic debate about family farming in Argentina has been almost exclusively focused on the Pampas region and has as its central focus the changes and dynamics that family operations have gone through within the framework of the processes of agrarian transformation. Small rural producers in Argentinian agriculture: rethinking the theoretical debate or an attempt at reconceptualization? The impact of the new economic order on the Argentine agrarian structure was not uniform throughout the country. There was a fall of 29 per cent in agriculture and livestock operations in the Pampas region, while other regions such as Northwest Argentina (NOA) showed sustained processes or slight growth in the number of small o…
