The internet provides the means through which a “self-activating terrorist” may first self-radicalize through some imaginary or sympathetic connection with an organized terrorist network. Additionally, the internet allows such a self-activating terrorist to move into the stage of radical violent action. The internet serves both functions by providing the lone wolf with not only a rhetorical medium for self-justification and communication through …

  • Draculas, Vampires, and Other Undead Forms

John Browning, Caroline Joan Picart et al.•BOOK•Draculas, vampires, and other…•2009

Since the publication of Dracula in 1897, Bram Stoker's original creation has been a source of inspiration for artists, writers, and filmmakers. From Universal's early black-and-white films and Hammer's Technicolor representations that followed, iterations of Dracula have been cemented in mainstream cinema. • Rhetorically Reconfiguring Victimhood and Agency

    Caroline Joan Picart•ARTICLE•Rhetoric and Public Affairs•2003•Cited by: 24•References: 2

In this article I examine the rhetorical dimensions of feminist lawmaking on rape and battering, as instantiated in Violence Against Women Act, and ask why this controversial act, and in particular its civil rights remedy, resulted in ambiguous gains. This article explores the nature of gendered and embodied interaction in American-style ballroom dance. Issues of femininity/masculinity, being subject-objects of the aesthetic gaze, and freedom and constraint are paramount to the exploration of what it means to do ballroom as both a competitive event and an art form. One of the aims of this piece is to use frame grabs from a dance video, as well as a streamed online version, to highlight the exp…

  • Blurring Boundaries

    Open Access•Caroline Joan Picart•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1997•References: 1

While there are some valuable insights in the interpretation by Fadlon and Lewin-Epstein of the 'Ghostly Imprint' controversy,l I believe that much of their analysis is built upon a misunderstanding of my usage of Collins and Pinch's framework in an attempt to describe and understand, and not simply categorize, the events that led to the onset, progression and closure of the Benveniste-Maddox counter-trials
