Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Second Language Research
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers key insights into the varying neurocognitive processes underlying second language (L2) processing, particularly in showing the various regions and networks that serve language processing and control. MRI makes use of the electromagnetic properties of the hydrogen ions within the body to produce highly detailed, three‐dimensional images of the brain, both structural and functional (fMRI). Functional magnetic…
Lexical interference and prediction in sentence processing among Russian heritage speakers
In line with emerging trends examining sentence processing in heritage language (HL) bilingualism and adopting an individual differences approach, the present study investigated the role of prediction and lexical interference in 68 Russian HL bilinguals in North America. The former was investigated by examining how Russian HL bilinguals processed sentences with semantically constraining verbs, whereas the latter was assessed examining how context…
Bilectal Exposure Modulates Neural Signatures to Conflicting Grammatical Properties
The current study investigated gender (control) and number (target) agreement processing in Northern and non-Northern Norwegians living in Northern Norway. Participants varied in exposure to Northern Norwegian (NN) dialect(s), where number marking differs from most other Norwegian dialects. In a comprehension task involving reading NN dialect writing, P600 effects for number agreement were significantly affected by NN exposure. The more exposure …
Monolingual comparative normativity in bilingualism research is out of “ control ”
Herein, we contextualize, problematize, and offer some insights for moving beyond the problem of monolingual comparative normativity in (psycho) linguistic research on bilingualism. We argue that, in the vast majority of cases, juxtaposing (functional) monolinguals to bilinguals fails to offer what the comparison is supposedly intended to do: meet the standards of empirical control in line with the scientific method. Instead, the default nature o…

Riding the (brain) waves! Using neural oscillations to inform bilingualism research
The study of the brains’ oscillatory activity has been a standard technique to gain insights into human neurocognition for a relatively long time. However, as a complementary analysis to ERPs, only very recently has it been utilized to study bilingualism and its neural underpinnings. Here, we provide a theoretical and methodological starter for scientists in the (psycho)linguistics and neurocognition of bilingualism field(s) to understand the bas…
Oscillatory brain dynamics of pronoun processing in native Spanish speakers and in late second language learners of Spanish
A longstanding question in the second language acquisition literature is whether late second language (L2) learners process grammatical structures in a native-like manner. Here, we use Time Frequency Representation (TFR) analysis to test morpho-syntactic processing of clitic pronouns in native and late L2 learners of Spanish. The TFR results show overall similar power decreases in theta, alpha, and beta frequencies in both groups. Critically, the…
The power of neural oscillations to inform sentence comprehension
The field of psycholinguistics is currently experiencing an explosion of interest in the analysis of neural oscillations-rhythmic brain activity synchronized at different temporal and spatial levels. Given that language comprehension relies on a myriad of processes, which are carried out in parallel in distributed brain networks, there is hope that this methodology might bring the field closer to understanding some of the more basic (spatially an…
