  • Modeling change in cognitive skills and its effects on self-esteem and drug use during adolescence

Open Access•Lawrence M Scheier, Martin Komarc et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

We used latent transition analysis with a panel cohort of youth to examine change in cognitive skill use and its influence on self-esteem and drug use. Skills were assessed in the 7th and 9th grades, self-esteem in the 10th grade, and drug use in the 12th grade. Three status groups emerged, including both high and low cognitive skill use, and a class employing mostly self-talk reward strategies. There was moderate stability in status; however, ov…

  • Onset of the Non-Medical Use of Prescription and Over-the-Counter Medications during Early Adolescence

Open Access•Sarosh Khan, Kenneth W Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

This study examined the prevalence and psychosocial predictors of the non-medical use of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications and compared these to cigarette, marijuana, and alcohol use in a cohort of early adolescents ( N = 1887) aged 11 to 13, a critical risk period for the initiation of substance use. Participants were students attending 22 middle schools in the northeastern United States. Participants completed surveys in the c…

Sexual violence and substance use are important public health problems among university students. The present study examined rates of sexual violence victimization, perpetration, and substance use among first-year university women. Participants ( n = 974) attending 14 universities across the United States completed an online confidential survey at the beginning and again later in their first year. The sample included women who identified as heter…

  • Multiple Health Behavior Programs in School Settings

Open Access•Veronica Velasco, Corrado Celata et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Typically, schools implement health promotion programs that focus on a single behavioral domain. Multiple related health topics may be addressed using separate interventions, potentially producing overlap in program content. However, integrative approaches in health promotion have the potential to produce interventions capable of improving multiple health behaviors. In particular, more research is needed to identify the conditions and the factors…

  • Prevention of Unwanted Sexual Contact Among Cadets at the United States Air Force Academy

Kenneth W Griffin, Christopher Williams et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2021•References: 5

This study tested the effectiveness of a small-group preventive intervention designed to prevent unwanted sexual contact among cadets at the US Air Force Academy. Among cadets in the incoming class of 2021, unwanted sexual contact was cut by nearly half in the intervention group relative to the control group. This study is one of the first rigorously designed trials to demonstrate a significant impact on unwanted sexual contact among students att…

  • Increasing Implementation Fidelity for School-Based Drug Abuse Prevention

Open Access•Gilbert J Botvin, Kenneth W Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Society for Social…•2018•References: 1

Objective: A substantial barrier to translating prevention science into practice is the potential for low implementation fidelity when evidence-based interventions are delivered in real-world settings. This study tested the extent to which enhanced training and technical assistance can improve implementation fidelity of LifeSkills Training, an evidence-based drug abuse prevention program. Method: We recruited and randomly assigned middle schools …

  • Identity Distress and Negative Affect in College Students

    Jessica Samuolis, Kenneth W Griffin•ARTICLE•Identity•2014

Many young people attend college during the peak years of identity exploration. This research examines the prevalence of identity distress among college students and the degree to which participants may meet the DSM-IV classification for identity problem. In addition, this study examines the extent to which participants with high levels of identity distress report symptoms of depression and other symptoms of negative affect. Findings indicated th…

  • Perceived Friend and Peer Smoking and Direct and Indirect Refusal Skills as Predictors of Cigarette Smoking in U.S. and Japanese Middle School Students

Lindsay Gibbon, Kenneth W Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2014

Adolescents (aged 12-14 years) from the United States (n = 539) and Japan (n = 644) completed surveys regarding tobacco use, perceptions of friend and peer smoking, and their own likelihood of using smoking refusal skills. U.S. youth were more likely to report lifetime or monthly tobacco use, whereas Japanese youth were more likely to smoke ≥20 cigarettes per week. High perceived friend and peer smoking prevalence predicted lifetime smoking, wher…

  • Long-Term Effects of Self-Control on Alcohol Use and Sexual Behavior among Urban Minority Young Women

    Open Access•Kenneth W Griffin, Lawrence M Scheier et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011

High risk alcohol use and sexual behaviors peak in young adulthood and often occur in the same individuals. Alcohol use has been found to impair decision-making and contribute to high risk sexual activity. However, the association between alcohol use and risky sexual behavior may also reflect enduring individual differences in risk taking, sociability, self-control, and related variables. Both behaviors can serve similar functions related to recr…

  • Initial Internal Reliability and Descriptive Statistics for a Brief Assessment Tool for the Life Skills Training Drug-Abuse Prevention Program

    Open Access•Araxi P Macaulay, Kenneth W Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2002

Adolescent drug use in the United States remains the highest in the industrialized world. Fortunately there have been significant advances in developing effective prevention programs for adolescent drug use. An important issue in evaluating such programs is that the self-report surveys have adequate psychometric properties and assess constructs targeted by an intervention. A questionnaire focusing on knowledge and drug-related measures was develo…

  • Dynamic Growth Models of Self-Esteem and Adolescent Alcohol Use

    Open Access•Lawrence M Scheier, Gilbert J Botvin et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2000•Cited by: 16•References: 14

Latent growth modeling was used to test dynamic relations between self-esteem and alcohol use in 740 middle school youth assessed at four time points. Self-esteem was characterized by a negative growth trajectory, whereas alcohol use increased steadily in a linear fashion. An initial simplified model positing bidirectional influences indicated an inverse relation between changes in self-esteem and alcohol use over time, but that initial levels of…
