  • Making a difference

Stacy Tye-Williams, Keith Berry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Communication…•2026

This Field Report explains a decade-long, intradisciplinary initiative that drew from communication-based bullying research to develop and implement anti-bullying outreach efforts in three applied contexts (two schools and one health care organization). We begin by describing the origins and evolution of the National Communication Association's Anti-Bullying Project. We then detail the three primary summits we held, reflect on the collaborative p…

  • Pushing the Max Planck YouTube Channel With the Help of Influencers

Open Access•Dominik Donhauser, Christina S Beck et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2021

We wanted to increase the number of subscriptions to the Max Planck YouTube Channel with the help of influencers. In recent years, we have published a video series called “Max Planck Cinema” to increase students' interest in complex scientific content. The videos generated sometimes well over 100,000 views (aggregated over several years). But these figures fall far short of the number of views of German YouTube influencers in the field of science…

  • Health system reform and safe abortion

    Open Access•Christina S Beck, Nicole S Berry et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2013

Unsafe abortion serves as a marker of global inequity as it is concentrated in the developing world where the poorest and most vulnerable women live. While liberalisation of abortion law is essential to the reduction of unsafe abortion, a number of challenges exist beyond this important step. This paper investigates how popular health system reforms consonant with neoliberal agendas can challenge access to safe abortion. We use Mongolia, a countr…

  • Intersecting Narratives

    Open Access•Christina S Beck•ARTICLE•Communication Studies•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 17

In this article, I advance an explanation to account for the exceptionally vested nature of soap opera viewers in “their stories.” After reviewing relevant literature on soap operas and fan contemporary media, I highlight the complex, co-constructed narrative intersections that contribute to powerful and multilayered experiences related to daytime dramas. In particular, I contend that soap operas matter to viewers because the multigenerational na…

Christina S Beck, José Luis Benítez et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2004•Cited by: 7

Based on an analysis of articles in health communication journals and in regional, national, and international communication journals, this study identifies publication trends and research priorities for health communication articles in the 1990s and the year 2000. Based on a content analysis of article abstracts, researchers determined the extent to which health communication articles appeared in various journals as well as the emphasis on speci…

  • "How can I Put this?" Exaggerated Self-Disparagement as Alignment Strategy during Problematic Disclosures by Patients to Doctors

    Open Access•Athena Du Pré, Christina S Beck•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•1997•Cited by: 5•References: 18

This article explores how patients engage in problematic disclosures to their physician. Dialogue from medical encounters suggests that patients sometimes use exaggerated self-disparagement to bid for a physician's forgiveness and reassurance. Grounded in work on conversational framing and alignment, this study documents the conversational mechanism of overclaiming. Overclaims function like disclaimers or accounts, but rather than disclaiming res…

  • I've got some points I'd like to make here

    Christina S Beck•ARTICLE•Political Communication•1996•Cited by: 13•References: 17

Politicians are increasingly participating in interactions, readily available to their constituents on the mass media, that entail managing potentially confrontational conversations with others. In fact, the 1992 vice presidential debate featured a format that forced the candidates to confront each other directly during open discussion periods. This article explores how the candidates resolved the rhetorical and interactional problem inherent to …

  • Negotiating Interpersonal and Medical Talk

    Open Access•Christina S Beck, Sandra L Ragan•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•1992•Cited by: 7•References: 9

Extending from previous research on code switching and conversational framing, the present study focuses on the interaction between a nurse practitioner and her patients during gynaecologic exams. Specifically, this research found that the nurse practitioner and her patients initiated and responded to cues that shifted the medical encounter from medical to personoriented and then back to medical frames. Further, this research indicates that such …
