The Demographic Transition of the Catholic Priesthood and the End of Clericalism in Spain
The evidence showing patterns of demographic transition (decline) in the Catholic Church are similar in both Spain and the United States. Yet while the patterns are similar, the Spanish case reflects a very different historical circumstance in which the institutional church was closely allied to state interests. The article argues that the dialectical relationship between forces of clericalism and anticlericalism shaped both institutions, church …
The community land policy and the outlook for forestry in Galicia. After a brief presentation of Galicia and its land structure, the article analyses the conditions governing Spain's entry into the EEC in 1985 and the failure to take into account the specific resources of this region. Forestry activities appear of prime importance (the mountainous area of Galicia includes over 2 million hectares of forest, of which only 1 million hectares are exp…
Demographic Transitions in Religious Organizations
Our aim is to adapt the theory of the demographic transition to the analysis of social change in religious organizations. Assuming the demographic transition of the clergy to be the driving force for pervasive structural change in the Roman Catholic church, we analyze the component processes of the transition as it unfolds over eight decades and document its consequences for changing the size and age distribution of the clergy population. The dat…
