A Challenge to Orthodoxy in Psychology: Thomas Sowell and Social Justice
Psychologists address social-justice problems in their research and applied work, and their scholarly efforts have been influenced by assumptions, constructs, and hypotheses from the political left. Recently, some psychologists have called for increased intellectual and political diversity in psychology, particularly as such diversity may lead to improved problem-solving. As an attempt to increase intellectual diversity in psychology, we review h…

Are illiberal acts unethical? APA’s Ethics Code and the protection of free speech
The American Psychological Association's (APA's) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (American Psychological Association, 2017b; hereinafter referred to as the Ethics Code) does not contain an enforceable standard regarding psychologists' role in either honoring or protecting the free speech of others, or ensuring that their own free speech is protected, including an important corollary of free speech, the protection of academ…
Treatment Outcomes for Latinos and Non-Hispanic White Victims of Crime: An Effectiveness Study
This was a record review study. Data from all cases seen ( N = 121) at the Victims of Crime Treatment Center over a 7-year period were examined to collect demographic information and determine diagnoses, the intervention that was used, and whether or not the client successfully completed treatment. Results from a logistic regression revealed that ethnicity was not a predictor of treatment success in this sample. Treatment outcomes for empirically…

The (even) bolder model: The clinical psychologist as metaphysician-scientist-practitioner
The (even) bolder model: The clinical psychologist as metaphysician-scientist-practitioner
Is the clinical psychologist best characterized as a scientist-practitioner? Or does the practice of science and psychotherapy involve metaphysics to such an extent that the clinical psychologist ought to be considered a metaphysician-scientist-practitioner? To answer these questions, the roles, if any, of metaphysics in science and psychotherapy are examined. This article investigates this question by examining the views of the logical positivis…

Community psychologies and values: The importance of being urnless
This paper is a response to the Rappaport (1984) and Attneave (1984) commentaries on the O'Donohue, Hanley, and Krasner (1984) article on the value contexts of the community psychologies. We have focused on similarities and differences between our positions and those of Rappaport and Attneave. We are all in agreement that behavioral community psychology is not value free, a point which is emphasized in our earlier paper. One of our goals was to f…
Toward the explication of the value contexts of the community psychologies
Value issues are inseparable from any scientific pursuit and they become particularly influential in the applied scientific areas of community and behavioral community psychology. The explication of value positions is one way of dealing positively with the ubiquity of value issues. The role of values in community mental health, community psychology, and behavioral community psychology are contrasted. Implicit value positions are entrenched in the…
