This article examines how regional voting patterns explain the success of presidential candidacies in Colombia between 1970 and 2022. Utilizing logit models and Bayesian probability estimations, the study demonstrates that conservative victories do not stem from uniform national support but rather from the strategic articulation of a territorial coalition grounded in the heterogeneous distribution of preferences. This electoral architecture relie…

  • Partidos tradicionales y terceras fuerzas

Open Access•Valeria Ferreira Macías, Carlos Enrique Moreno León et al.•ARTICLE•Colombia Internacional•2026

Objective/context: One goal of recent political reforms has been to expand the participation of new political forces; in the 2015 and 2019 local elections, third forces competed in every Colombian municipality, yet few achieved relevance vis-à-vis traditional parties; this study examines how and under what conditions third forces reshape the mayoral electoral market, distinguishing between organizations with national and local reach. Methodology:…

  • Observer States and interregional trade between Asia and Latin America

Open Access•Carlos Enrique Moreno León, Vladimir Rouvinski•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Political Science•2025

This paper seeks to reduce the knowledge gap about the motivation of Asian and Oceanic countries that want to become permanent observers of formal regional integration agreements in Latin America and Caribbean, especially those related to international trade. Using semiparametric cox models, the authors reveal the interest that Asian and Oceanic countries have in observing the State of the rule of law by joining the formalized frameworks that pro…

  • Unique offerings

    Open Access•Seden Akcinaroglu, Judy M Berkowitz et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict Management and Peace…•2025•References: 32

This study examines the factors influencing non-state armed actors’ (NSAAs) ability and willingness to implement rebel governance, with a focus on the group's ideological distinction from adversaries and the government. We argue that a unique ideology acts as an effective branding tool, enhancing governance success as constituents recognize and align with it. This ideology allows NSAAs to offer a distinct social contract to their followers with m…

  • Respice Polum in Colombia's Voting Behaviour in the UN General Assembly

Open Access•Carlos Enrique Moreno León, Paola Fajardo‐heyward•ARTICLE•Journal of Politics in Latin…•2024•References: 25

What determines small states’ behaviour in multi-lateral organisations? Mainstream theories of international relations expect small states to be conditioned by the power asymmetries in which they are immersed. Recent work has revisited this assumption, highlighting the need to understand the conditions in which small states can exert some agency. We use the case of Colombia to test our argument. Due to the close relationship that Colombia has wit…

  • Migrate, Cooperate, or Resist

Open Access•Carlos Enrique Moreno León•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2021

By using innovative microlevel data from Colombia’s civil war, this article examines protests, one of many actions that civilians employ to resists peacefully armed actors during civil war. By using a cost-benefit analysis, the author argues that inhabitants can mobilize and solve their collective action problem when the costs of migrating or supporting one side in a war are too expensive. By examining the civil conflict on Colombia between 1988 …

  • Rebel Rivalry and the Strategic Nature of Rebel Group Ideology and Demands

Open Access•Efe Tokdemir, Evgeny Sedashov et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2021•Cited by: 26•References: 68

How does the presence of multiple combatants affect rebel groups’ ideological and demand positioning? Although violent forms of inter-group conflict have been widely studied in the civil war literature, rebel groups’ strategic use of ideology and demands has received scarce scholarly attention. We argue that the pressure of competition forces rebel groups to differentiate themselves ideologically and demand-wise from their rivals to maximize thei…

  • Chronicle of a Survival Foretold

    Open Access•Carlos Enrique Moreno León•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 32

This article examines the circumstances under which civilians, using protests as a mechanism, alter the strategic use of violence by armed actors (rebels and state forces). By examining the civil war in Colombia between 1988 and 2005, this study finds that combatants decrease their attacks against the population when civilians protest against the enemy. Combatants interpret such demonstrations as costly signals of loyalty. Furthermore, when insur…

  • Relaciones entre Colombia y Europa 1999-2002

    Open Access•Carlos Enrique Moreno León•ARTICLE•Revista CS•2009

Open Access•Carlos León, Nora Prudkin et al.•ARTICLE•Desarrollo Económico•1985•Cited by: 3
