Prevalence and risk factors for anaemia during pregnancy in Sylhet district of Bangladesh
Background: Anaemia during pregnancy poses a major public health problem globally, with reported prevalences ranging from approximately 5.2% to 65.7%. A significant portion of this burden is borne by low- and middle-income countries. We aimed to determine the prevalence of anaemia during pregnancy and identify the factors associated with anaemia in the third trimester of pregnancy in a cohort of women in the rural Sylhet district, Bangladesh. Met…
Nutrition and Handgrip Strength Among Adults in Rural Matlab, Bangladesh
OBJECTIVE: Handgrip strength (HGS) provides a dynamic indicator of overall strength and physical fitness. Population-based investigations of anemia and iron deficiency as predictors of HGS are limited; most studies rely on elderly and/or clinical samples. We assessed iron deficiency, anemia, body mass index (BMI), and body fat percentage as predictors of HGS among a representative cross-sectional sample of adult residents of Matlab, Bangladesh. M…
Inverse Association Between Betel Quid Use and Diabetes in Rural Bangladesh
These models support the hypothesis that betel quid use could decrease, rather than increase, risk for diabetes in the Bangladeshi context, particularly among men (who have more frequent betel quid use than women). Heterogeneity in betel quid preparation across settings, multifactorial effects of betel quid use, and publication bias may contribute to differences between these findings and other observational studies
Social cohesion, trust, and utilisation of maternal health services among refugee and host community women in Bangladesh and Kenya
The global refugee crisis places significant pressure on host communities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Social cohesion and trust between refugee and host communities are critical for maternal health service utilisation. This study explores the relationship between host-refugee trust, social cohesion, and maternal health service use in Bangladesh and Kenya, focusing on facility-based delivery, antenatal care visits, and postn…
Betel quid use is associated with anemia among both men and women in Matlab, Bangladesh
Anemia accounts for 8.8% of total disability burden worldwide. Betel quid use among pregnant women has been found to increase anemia risk. Betel quid is prepared by wrapping the betel (or areca) nut, with spices and other additions, in betel or tobacco leaf and it is chewed or placed in the mouth. We explored the association between betel quid use and anemia among men and non-pregnant women. We collected data from a random sample of women and the…
Sero-prevalence and risk factors for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 infection in women and children in a rural district of Bangladesh
Background: Bangladesh reported its first COVID-19 case on March 8, 2020. Despite lockdowns and promoting behavioural interventions, as of December 31, 2021, Bangladesh reported 1.5 million confirmed cases and 27 904 COVID-19-related deaths. To understand the course of the pandemic and identify risk factors for SARs-Cov-2 infection, we conducted a cohort study from November 2020 to December 2021 in rural Bangladesh. Methods: After obtaining infor…
Machine learning prediction of gestational age from metabolic screening markers resistant to ambient temperature transportation
Background: Knowledge of gestational age is critical for guiding preterm neonatal care. In the last decade, metabolic gestational dating approaches emerged in response to a global health need; because in most of the developing world, accurate antenatal gestational age estimates are not feasible. These methods initially developed in North America have now been externally validated in two studies in developing countries, however, require shipment o…
Using Amanhi-ACT cohorts for external validation of Iowa new-born metabolic profiles based models for postnatal gestational age estimation
BACKGROUND: Globally, 15 million infants are born preterm and another 23.2 million infants are born small for gestational age (SGA). Determining burden of preterm and SGA births, is essential for effective planning, modification of health policies and targeting interventions for reducing these outcomes for which accurate estimation of gestational age (GA) is crucial. Early pregnancy ultrasound measurements, last menstrual period and post-natal ne…
Labor migration is associated with lower rates of underweight and higher rates of obesity among left-behind wives in rural Bangladesh
BACKGROUND: Among Bangladeshi men, international labor migration has increased ten-fold since 1990 and rural to urban labor migration rates have steadily increased. Labor migration of husbands has increased household wealth and redefined women's roles, which have both positively and negatively impacted the health of wives "left behind". We examined the direct and indirect effects of husband labor migration on chronic disease indicators and outcom…
Prenatal nutrition supplementation and growth biomarkers in preadolescent Bangladeshi children
Little is known about the usefulness of biomarkers to study the influence of prenatal nutrition supplementation in improving child growth. Anthropometry is not always straightforward to understand how nutrition might impact growth, especially in settings with high rates of malnutrition and infections. We examined the effects of prenatal supplementation on growth and growth biomarkers and the relationship between anthropometric measures and growth…
Early childhood malnutrition trajectory and lung function at preadolescence
Objective: Chronic undernutrition is a common phenomenon in Bangladesh. However, information is grossly lacking to report the correlation between chronic undernutrition trajectory and lung function in children. The aim of the current study was to understand the association between early-childhood chronic undernutrition trajectory and lung function at preadolescence. Design: The current study is a part of the 9-year follow-up of a large-scale coho…
Effect of routine iron–folic acid supplementation among rural pregnant women living in low- and high-groundwater-iron areas in Bangladesh
Objective: The present study investigated the risks and benefits of routine Fe–folic acid (IFA) supplementation in pregnant women living in low- and high-groundwater-Fe areas in Bangladesh. Design: A case-controlled prospective longitudinal study design was used to compare the effect of daily Fe (60 mg) and folic acid (400 μg) supplementation for 3·5 months. Setting: A rural community in Bangladesh. Participants: Pregnant women living in low-grou…
Nutritional status and childhood wheezing in rural Bangladesh
Objective To investigate the association between current childhood nutritional status and current wheezing among pre-school children in rural Bangladesh. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Matlab region, rural Bangladesh. Subjects Children ( n 912) aged 4·5 years. Anthropometric measurements of the mothers and their children were taken during a 1-year period from December 2007 to November 2008. Current wheezing was identified using the Interna…
P2-388 Calcium in breast milk is associated with the underweight of infant at around 6 months age in a cohort of Bangladesh
Introduction Appropriate growth of infants is important for their health and further life. In Bangladesh, there are still many infants below the growth standards. Calcium (Ca) is a major component of skeleton and it plays an important role in building bones early in life. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between Ca level in breast milk and subsequent infants growth in rural Bangladesh. Methods The MINIMat (“Maternal and…
SP1-44 Association between allergic diseases and nutritional status among children in Bangladesh
Introduction Interest has been arisen whether nutritional status is related to development of allergic diseases in children. Our aim was to investigate the association between nutritional status and serum IgE level in the developing country. Methods This cross-sectional study was nested into a large scale nutrition intervention trial among pregnant women in rural Bangladesh. In this follow-up study, we collected venous blood to measure serum tota…
