Suitcase Aesthetics
article on what he characterised as the 'Art in Britain of the Immigrations', published in Third Text in 1991, begins with a vivid, highly compressed image of a century's arrivals to Britain, the migrants and refugees accompanied by their luggage: 'On the wharfside tin trunks, some knocked about, dented. On Location
On location in Prague in the later twentieth century, for a film set in eighteenth-century Vienna, in Amadeus (Milos Forman, USA, 1984) one city is transposed into another, seen in place of another. This visual, temporal and spatial displacement, characteristic of film-making ‘on location’, comes about as much because of the expectations of the audience as the art of the film's production. It is this palimpsest of imaginary and actual spaces whic…

The introduction explores the relationship between the two: are art history and visual studies distinct, antagonistic, or complementary enterprises?
