Decolonial pedagogies in educational leadership and other fields
This academic review presents decolonial pedagogies used with settler students in educational leadership, teacher education, and related educational fields. I draw upon scholarship mainly from Canada to illuminate pedagogical pathways for decolonizing education that center critical Indigenous literature and knowledge systems. Fifty scholarly sources, coded for analysis, provided context and insights for describing a miseducation–education tension…
Equity Leadership in K–12 Online Communities Under Democratic Duress
To understand virtual leaders’ work at the intersection of equity and community, virtual school leadership (VSL) was examined with relevance to preparation and research. Research questions were: How is VSL described in extant literature? How is VSL applicable to leaders’ preparation and development? An integrative review approach was applied to online learning and virtual leadership linked to community and equity concepts. Document analysis was u…
Creative Learning and Expression in College Classrooms Across Different Cultures
Creativity and learning have long been connected in scholarship, with emphasis on developing and facilitating personal creativity. For this Fulbright‐sponsored, exploratory qualitative study, I aimed to understand how college students construct meaning of creativity where contextual constraints exist using Kaufman and Beghetto's Four C Model of Creativity. Based on an international case study, the research question was, What forms of student crea…
Weaponizing settler slogans to mandate colonial school policy in the Americas
The topic of this academic review is settler slogans that mandate colonial school policy in North America. Also discussed is Indigenous futurity as a strategy for transforming education and countering the educational harm that comes from weaponized language. Beginning in 1887, the US federal government authorized colonial schooling, using the dangerous educational cliché “Kill the Indian in him, and save the man.” The purpose of this article was …
Charter movement controversy
Controversy is intensifying with the rapid spread of charter schools and their domination of the education reform agenda. As charter enrolment increases in the USA, inequities in education worsen. This article contributes to the debate on contemporary education policy by critically examining charter issues from the US literature and stakeholder data. We add insights to research on charter controversy from public discourse and stakeholder groups. …
I Write as an Uninvited Guest on Indigenous Land
A settler colonial educator of European descent, I write as an uninvited guest on Indigenous land. Truths of the past are determining the future of humanity, a contribution that allyship can make. In this article, I share vital information and critical ideas that underscore the importance of allyship in the contexts of settler colonialism and educational transformation. My purpose is to help anticolonial educators connect their Indigenous teachin…
Reentering a World in Lockdown
This essay reflects the spirit of our times, at least in North America. Reentering a generative world in lockdown is juxtaposed with the gains and losses in our communities. “For All Eternity,” my poem, is about the generative cycle of rebirth and death and the forces that move us from decay to regeneration. As the coronavirus pandemic paradoxically rages and abates, in our wisdom, may we heal from this protracted moment in history. May we rememb…
Defining mentoring
This literature review of contemporary mentoring delineates mentoring definitions and anchors these with explanatory discourse. Select empirical studies spanning 1983–2019 were analyzed, with a focus on education across grade levels. Alternative mentoring issues, types, and applications, also located, are integral to this discussion. While researchers describe what mentoring is, it is also important to clarify what it is not. Traditional definiti…

This review article focuses on perspectives from Canadian Indigenous literature about decolonizing education on behalf of Aboriginal populations. The research informs accountability, education, and policy in Canada and globally. Components of colonization parsed in sources are tribal injustice, dispossession, discrimination, conflict, and miseducation. Experiential interventions for decolonizing curriculum, classrooms, and communities are describ…

Fostering Community Life and Human Civility in Academic Departments Through Covenant Practice
Creating desirable academic departments for individuals’ well-being and quality scholarship is an important effort as well as a novel idea. The focus of this reflective article is twofold: (a) We present a social capital theory of social justice covenants as a product and process of community building, and (b) we share the multiple lived experiences of three scholars within the context of our department's covenant ideology and practice. We explor…

The Principal's Role in Fostering Collaborative Learning Communities Through Faculty Study Group Development
This article explores the leadership of school principals with respect to faculty study group development as a key element of the professional learning community. Questions asked concern the approaches that principals use to facilitate study group processes that, in turn. foster teacher learning and student achievement, and ways in which principals might best support the integration of schoolwide faculty teams and school–university partnerships. …

Re ́sume ́ in Motion
Can middle school serve as a site for educating students on how their bodies are essential for learning and embodying knowledge differently? This experimental work concerns the new learning that a movement intervention introduced in the context of a career unit of a language arts curriculum. The experiences and reflections of eighth graders from an American school are presented creatively as scripts and interpreted for their learning value. What …
