While most sociology majors must take a statistics course, the content of this course varies widely across departments. Starting from the assumption that sociology students should be able to engage effectively with the sociological literature, this article examines the statistical techniques used in 2,804 journal articles—from four generalist sociology journals from 1990 to 2019 and 11 additional sociology journals from 2019—in order to assess wh…

    Open Access•Thomas J Linneman•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 31

Uptalk is the use of a rising, questioning intonation when making a statement, which has become quite prevalent in contemporary American speech. Women tend to use uptalk more frequently than men do, though the reasons behind this difference are contested. I use the popular game show Jeopardy! to study variation in the use of uptalk among the contestants' responses, and argue that uptalk is a key way in which gender is constructed through interact…

  • Old Gay Men's Bodies and Masculinities

    Open Access•Kathleen F Slevin, Thomas J Linneman•ARTICLE•Men and Masculinities•2010•Cited by: 28•References: 30

In the hierarchy of masculinities, old men and gay men are clearly subordinated. Many assume, therefore, that old gay men are doubly stigmatized; however, we argue that the picture is decidedly more complex. In this article, we explore the bodily experiences of aging through analysis of intensive interviews with 10 gay men who are in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. We focus on the interpretations and strategies these gay men use to make sense of their a…

    Open Access•Thomas J Linneman•ARTICLE•Men and Masculinities•2008•Cited by: 9•References: 17

Although many gay men do not engage in effeminate behavior, they still may be feminized in social interaction. This article illustrates the importance of this distinction through a two-method study of the popular sitcom Will & Grace. The show includes multiple representations of gay masculinities, from the effeminate gay man to the more masculine 'very straight gay.' However, a comprehensive content analysis shows that both gay primary characters…

  • Representing Social Movements: Advocacy and Activism in Northwest Bookstores

    Open Access•Thomas J Linneman•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Much social movement research examines the role played by the individual. Studies of this type have focused almost exclusively on the individual's involvement in collective action. This article highlights individual-level behavior outside of social movement organizations. Using results from a recent survey of booksellers, I show that advocacy for the gay and lesbian rights movement and the environmental movement is expressed in several ways withi…
