Comparing undergraduate learning outcomes and experiences across code-based and non-code-based statistical software platforms in courses utilizing the Passion-Driven Statistics curriculum
This study examines whether undergraduate students in an introductory statistics course report different learning outcomes and experiences based on whether they use code-based or non-code-based statistical software. The sample included 2,241 students enrolled in courses using the Passion-Driven Statistics curriculum across 61 post-secondary institutions. Seventy-two percent of participants learned a code-based platform (R, SAS, Stata, Python), wh…
An ecological study of the association between childhood stunting, water, sanitation, and protein access, 2000–20
Adequate height attainment during early childhood foreshadows lifelong health. Stunting may be caused by environmental enteric dysfunction but has persisted after improvements in water and sanitation access. Recent studies suggest tryptophan and other amino acids improve height attainment. This study used ecological data from 94 countries over 21 years (2000–20) (n = 1836) to evaluate the association between the percentage of children with stunti…
Family formation and post-secondary educational attainment among community college and 4-year college students
Background Early adulthood is a turning-point for educational attainment and family formation. Our understanding of whether family formation predicts educational attainment is incomplete for two growing populations: unmarried families and community college students. This study examined whether family formation among college students ages 18–24 predicts educational attainment at ages 25–32. Methods We test our hypothesis using data from the Nation…
Health Disparities Among Children in Immigrant Households
Giving syphilis and gonorrhea to friends
Eliciting friendship networks of people diagnosed with syphilis and gonorrhea may find members of their sexual networks, drug use networks, or people of similar STI risk. Friendship networks include more diagnosed cases of syphilis and gonorrhea than sexual networks alone, especially among populations with many non-disclosing men who have sex with men (MSM) and women who have sex with women (WSW). Future research should evaluate whether this frie…
School suspension predicts trichomoniasis five years later in a matched sample
School suspension is a marker for STI risk. Punishing adolescents for initial deviance may cause them to associate with riskier sexual networks even if they graduate high school and avoid criminal justice system involvement. Suspension may compound disadvantages for youth from below-median-income families, who have fewer resources for recovering from setbacks
Educational and Criminal Justice Outcomes 12 Years After School Suspension
A third of U.S. students are suspended over a K-12 school career. Suspended youth have worse adult outcomes than nonsuspended students, but these outcomes could be due to selection bias: that is, suspended youth may have had worse outcomes even without suspension. This study compares the educational and criminal justice outcomes of 480 youth suspended for the first time with those of 1,193 matched nonsuspended youth from a nationally representati…

Predicting Unprotected Sex and Unplanned Pregnancy among Urban African-American Adolescent Girls Using the Theory of Gender and Power
Do Jobs Work? Risk and Protective Behaviors Associated with Employment among Disadvantaged Female Teens in Urban Atlanta
Adolescent employment predicts lower educational engagement and achievement and greater engagement with risk behaviors. Most research has studied middle class rather than disadvantaged adolescents. We identified risk and protective behaviors associated with employment using data from a 3-wave, 12-month study of 715 low-socio-economic status female African American adolescents who were ages 15-21 at baseline. Adolescents who were employed at wave …
True Love Waits
Beyond BA Blinders
Postsecondary education mostly focuses on the four-year BA degree. Community colleges are often promoted as the first step toward the ultimate goal of a four-year degree. However, community colleges have extremely poor degree completion rates. There is evidence suggesting better results for their private, two-year counterparts—particularly for certificate completion. We will focus on occupational colleges—private accredited colleges that offer ca…
Reborn a Virgin
Objectives. We examined retractions of virginity pledges and of sexual histories among adolescents taking part in waves 1 and 2 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Methods. Logistic regression analyses were used to compare respondents’ reports of virginity pledges and sexual histories at waves 1 and 2. Results. Among wave 1 virginity pledgers, 53% denied having made a pledge at wave 2; after control for confounders, pledgers …
