  • Decolonizing Open Science: Southern Interventions

Open Access•M J Dutta, Mohan Dutta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2021

Hegemonic Open Science, emergent from the circuits of knowledge production in the Global North and serving the economic interests of platform capitalism, systematically erase the voices of the subaltern margins from the Global South and the Southern margins inhabiting the North. Framed within an overarching emancipatory narrative of creating access for and empowering the margins through data exchanged on the global free market, hegemonic Open Sci…

  • Urban upheavals as practices of new sexual ethics: “Kiss of Love” movement in India

    T T Sreekumar•ARTICLE•Journal of International and…•2020•References: 3

The paper probes the historical and cultural-utopian rationale behind the wide acceptability of “Kiss of Love” (KoL) movement in India that sprang up during 2015 and assesses its theoretical significance as a heterotopic social movement. Heterotopia embodies tensions between place and non-place in public spaces. In the Indian context, streets have been places of extreme social segregation in terms of caste, gender and sexuality. Heterotopia does …

  • Subpolitics and Democracy: The Role of New Media in the 2011 General Elections in Singapore

    Open Access•T T Sreekumar, Shobha Vadrevu•ARTICLE•Science Technology and Society•2013

Making use of the recent STS focus on the idea of subpolitics, the study seeks to understand the limited yet important implications of the rise of the political twitterati 1 for liberal democracy in Singapore. The phenomenon marks a significant development not in terms of facilitating mass upheavals or radical reforms as elsewhere in the world, but in terms of contributing towards the construction of counter narratives to the historically articul…

  • Multiple transcripts as political strategy: Social media and conflicting identities of the Moro liberation movement in the Philippines

    Open Access•Cheryll Ruth Soriano, T T Sreekumar et al.•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This article explores the engagement of online new media for political mobilization by movements of dissent from the margins based on a case study of a Muslim minority revolutionary organization in the Philippines. We find that, enabled by hybrid features of online media outlets, minorities use multiple transcripts that target diverse audiences and oscillate across multiple, fleeting representations, narratives and articulations. Our article supp…

  • ICTs and Development: Revisiting the Asian Experience

    Open Access•T T Sreekumar, Milagros Rivera‐Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•Science Technology and Society•2008

The technology question is inseparable from the question where technology occurs. Just as it is impossible to understand NATURE without immediately tackling the question of the LIFE-SIZE we cannot now talk about technological progress without immediately considering size, the dimensions, involved in the new technologies. (Virilio 1995: 99)

  • Cyber kiosks and dilemmas of social inclusion in rural India

    Open Access•T T Sreekumar•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 4

Enhanced deployment of information and communication technologies (ICTs) is considered as a major factor in eliminating vestiges of feudal social organization and hierarchies in rural Asia, and a techno-development paradigm of social change inherited from the industrial era is envisioned. South Asia has particularly witnessed massive proliferation of civil-society-based development initiatives to demonstrate ICTs’ potential to provide unprecedent…

  • Kerala's experience of development and change

    Govindan Parayil, T T Sreekumar•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Asia•2003•Cited by: 10•References: 33

Scholars have variously described the development experience of the Indian state of Kerala as a “model” or a “paradox” or an “enigma” and posited different meanings and significance to its developmental trajectory. Rather than following the usual one-dimensional accounting of Kerala's achievements and shortcomings, we present a historically informed social and political analysis to reveal the meaning and significance of the “Kerala model” of deve…

  • Contentions and contradictions of tourism as development option: The case of Kerala, India

    T T Sreekumar, Govindan Parayil•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2002•Cited by: 7•References: 7

Although the state of Kerala in India has been regarded as a 'model of development', its achievements may be unravelling thanks to a host of internal and external problems. The government and the bureaucracy now project tourism as 'an engine of growth'--an excellent source of foreign exchange and employment--to revive the local economy. Opposition to large-scale tourism projects by environmental and labour activists is often dealt with through un…
