Strategic knowledge production: Central bank scientisation in climate change and digital currencies
Why are contemporary central banks – institutions designed to be narrow, technical, and apolitical – suddenly publishing extensively on non-monetary topics? This research essay explores how knowledge production has become central banks’ primary tool for managing a fundamental tension: expanding the scope of their interventions while maintaining technocratic legitimacy. By analysing their knowledge production across two key domains – climate chang…

Social Protest and Conflict in Radical Neoliberalism: Chile, 2008–2020
Fairness beyond the ballot: A comparative analysis of failures of electoral integrity, perceptions of electoral fairness, and attitudes towards democracy across 18 countries
The Cultural Battle for the Chilean Model: Intellectual Elites in Times of Politicisation (2010-17)
The Chilean economic model has been widely studied both as a pioneering experiment in neoliberal policies and in regard to the growing social mobilisation against inequalities it has provoked. Insufficient attention has been paid, however, to the role of intellectuals in justifying and criticising the model. This article examines cultural battles over the economic model among the country's main columnists between 2010 and 2017, analysing debates …

Crisis and public intellectuals: From the transnational intellectual field to the digital global public circuit
We examine the modes of intervention of global public intellectuals at times of crisis. In critical situations, public intellectuals take positions on matters that affect the societies they inhabit and, eventually, all humanity. To this end, they take advantage of the opportunities afforded by new communications technologies, establishing an important distinction between the “analog” intellectual (who relies on the slow time of books, opinion col…
Between Distancing and Interdependence: The Conflict of Solidarities in the Covid-19 Pandemic
In a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19, different national states around the world have introduced strict measures to regulate social interaction that have affected the interdependence of modern societies. In this article, we argue that this handling of the pandemic produces a conflict of solidarities that can be interpreted by expanding Durkheim's classic formulations (organic and mechanical solidarity) to include the distinction between fra…
Death, doubt, truth and charisma: Exhumations, enigmas and manipulations surrounding the deaths of Salvador Allende and Eduardo Frei Montalva
This essay explores what has been an undertheorized link between forensic investigations and the sociological concept of charisma. To do so, we examine the deaths of two illustrious men: former Chilean presidents Salvador Allende and Eduardo Frei Montalva. Our interest is not to elucidate the causes of their deaths from a medical or legal point of view, but rather to understand what is constitutive of the investiture of political power. Based on …
Acting Politics: A Critical Sociology of the Political Field
Following Bourdieu, this book seeks ‘to think about politics without thinking politically’, advancing the view that politics as conventionally understood does not take place in a social vacuum, but in the context of a certain topography of society that cannot be reduced to formal spaces (such as a parliament). Engaging with Bourdieu’s theory of fields and focusing specifically on the notion of the ‘political field’, the author analyses from a soc…

The return of censitary suffrage? The effects of automatic voter registration and voluntary voting in Chile
How does a change from a compulsory voting system to a voluntary one affect election turnout? It is often argued that an electoral regime under which voting is voluntary reproduces class bias or, in other words, that the rich vote more than the poor. This
Inequality, Distributive Justice and Political Participation: An Analysis of the Case of Chile
Political participation has frequently been associated with individual resources; that is, individuals with higher incomes, higher educational levels and more time tend to participate in the political process to a greater extent than other individuals do. The present study suggests that in addition to resources, an individual's beliefs about economic distribution are an important determinant of participation both in elections and in protests. Bas…

Habitus, campo y capital.
The Politics of Technopols: Resources, Political Competence and Collective Leadership in Chile, 1990-2010
This article systematically analyses the inner circle of the coalition that governed Chile between 1990 and 2010. To this end, it takes the notion of 'technopol' and transforms it into a sociological category by clearly identifying the nature of the 'technical' and 'political' resources of 20 agents who served as ministers and undersecretaries in key government posts. Over two decades these agents provided the governing coalition, the Concertació…
For a Cognitive Sociology of Political Competence Alfredo Joignant The concept of "political competence" has for a long time remained forgotten by political scientists. Wrongfully so. As a matter of fact, this notion has been rediscovered by the sociology of labor, in France. In the United States, it has been revisited by the cognitive schools of social psychology (schema theory, social cognition) in order to make sense of the complex relationshi…
