  • Disease Data and Development

Open Access•Sofia Karina Trommlerová, Margarita de Vries Mecheva et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2026

Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) are widely used in global health research. Cross-country evidence based on these surveys could be unreliable, if survey availability and quality exhibited systematic patterns. This paper documents whether such patterns exist in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) over the period 1982–2016, examining countries’ economic, demographic, and political characteristi…

  • The Impact of Covid-19 on Abortions in Spain

Open Access•Sofia Karina Trommlerová, Libertad González•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2025•References: 14

We study changes in abortions in Spain around the first COVID-19 lockdown. We find a large drop (of 24 percent) in the number of abortions during and shortly after the strict lockdown in spring 2020. We explore to which extent the fall was driven by fewer (unintended) pregnancies due to social isolation versus restricted access to abortion services. We show that the drop was not more pronounced in areas located further away from abortion clinics …

  • When children have children

    Open Access•Sofia Karina Trommlerová•ARTICLE•Economics & Human Biology•2020

  • Temporal stability of child growth associations in Demographic and Health Surveys in 25 countries

Open Access•Morris Rieger, Sofia Karina Trommlerová et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2019

These findings inform about the generalizability of results stemming from cross-sectional studies that do not consider time variation - results regarding effects of child, parental, and household factors on HAZ do not necessarily need to be re-evaluated over time whereas results regarding the effects of infrastructure and community variables need to be monitored more frequently as they are expected to change. In addition, the study may improve th…

  • Age-Specific Correlates of Child Growth

Open Access•Morris Rieger, Matthias Rieger et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 51

Growth faltering describes a widespread phenomenon that height- and weight-for-age of children in developing countries collapse rapidly in the first two years of life. We study age-specific correlates of child nutrition using Demographic and Health Surveys from 56 developing countries to shed light on the potential drivers of growth faltering. Applying nonparametric techniques and exploiting within-mother variation, we find that maternal and hous…
