  • Possible peaceful existence of national and minority languages

    Open Access•Camiel Hamans•ARTICLE•Russian Journal of Linguistics•2026

This study examines whether it is socially feasible for a country to accommodate minority languages alongside a national language without this leading to tensions, violence or separatist movements. The aim of this article therefore is to discuss and clarify the relationship between national languages and minority languages, so that there is sufficient social space and appreciation for minority languages without detracting from the importance of a…

    Open Access•Camiel Hamans•ARTICLE•Roczniki Humanistyczne•2021

In this study the linguistic ideas of Goropius Becanus (1519-1573) and his followers Hendrik Laurensz Spieghel (1549-1612), Simon Stevin (1548-1620) and Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) are studied. Goropius Becanus has a poor reputation for his fantastic etymologies, which have been ridiculed by, for example, Leibniz. However, Becanus’ ideas about the position and value of his Dutch mother tongue have been influential for more than a century, as is demo…

  • Contra de linguïstische preutsheid

    Camiel Hamans•ARTICLE•Nederlandse taalkunde•2020

Against linguistic prudishness. About -gate and other libfixes This study aims to discuss libfixing as a non-morphemic process of word formation. Libfixes are ‘liberated’ elements that originate from the reanalysis of existing words, usually opaque forms or blends. A well-known example of a libfix is -gate from Watergate, whose borrowing and spreading in Dutch has been discussed by Hüning (2000). Among the other examples that are discussed are En…
