The appeal of the queer right
Robert Tobin was an astute reader of texts. In Peripheral Desires: The German Discovery of Sex, he summarized the long struggle within the German-speaking world to surface male-male longing, noting that some of the same tensions within the masculinist and emancipation movements continue to shape the “architecture of our most intimate desires” (Tobin 249). More recently, together with Peter Rehberg and Ivan Raykoff, he immersed himself in the play…

Like other historiographical fields, that of German history has been defined through most of its existence by the things historians argued about. We could go back well over a hundred years to the Methodenstreit over Karl Lamprecht's efforts to write multidisciplinary history, follow the line through the work of Eckart Kehr, Fritz Fischer, Hans Ulrich Wehler, and the Sonderweg debate, and continue on through the Historikerstreit and the Historiker…
The Queer Art of History
Settler Colonialism, Illiberal Memory, and German-Canadian Hate Networks in the Twentieth and Twenty-first Centuries
This article is part of the collaborative research project Populist Publics. Housed at Carleton University ( www.carleton.ca/populistpublics ), it applies a data-driven analysis of online hate networks to trace how false framings of the historical past, what we call historical misinformation, circulates across platforms, shaping the politics of the center alongside the fringes. We cull large datasets from social media platforms and run them throu…
Cross-dressing, Male Intimacy and the Violence of Transgression in Third Reich Photography
This co-authored article draws upon two distinct genres of photography, police mugshots and amateur soldier snapshots, to illustrate the value of queer visual culture methodologies for how to think about the visualization of violence, masculinity and desire. Building upon two vastly different depictions of male to female cross-dressing, one produced between 1934 and 1938 by the Berlin police and Gestapo of a transvestite and the other produced be…
The New Fascism Syllabus
This article analyzes the New Fascism Syllabus private Facebook discussion group, which came into being in the months following the 2016 US presidential election. Through the use of several scraping, data mining, and visualization programs and Facebook’s own platform analytics software, the article posits ways we might analyze Facebook fora as a mediated digital public sphere. It argues that digital spaces like these, however fraught, help users …
Giving voice to the sacred black female body in takayna country
In this chapter, I give a critical view of the representation of the sacred black female body in takayna country, lutuwitra (Tasmania), Australia. I use a discourse analysis from two sources to investigate methodologies that elucidate values relating to the black female body in the landscape. Whilst both sources concur that takayna country is female country, the language and methods used to characterize her sacredness are different. The applicati…
Sound, listening and the queer art of history
This article explores the role of the museum audioguide as a relational, sensorially driven mode of making and communicating diverse histories. It argues that the artist Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay's use of voice, storytelling, gesture, movement, and sound helps create conditions for empathic listening, bridging the past and present and widening the spectrum of possibilities for new and diverse knowledge formations. This use of aesthetic and historic…
Introduction
This essay examines ways in which historians might learn from queer approaches to the past. Drawing inspiration from queer theory and ideas long circulating in cultural, literary and medieval studies, it argues that there is much to be gained when we adopt a more self-reflexive, genealogical, context-specific analysis of lives lived. A queered history interrogates whether our guiding questions and assumptions might actually foreclose possible lin…
Architecture, Politics and Identity in Divided Berlin
Emily Pugh has written a comprehensive study of the role of architecture as a system of representing Cold War tensions in divided Berlin, from the end of the Second World War to the fall of the Wall. She argues that the pains of reconstruction and division, political antipathy and a grindingly slow economy on either side of the city’s boundary may best be viewed through the actions of average citizens, city planners and politicians in coping with…

Life among the Ruins
As home to 1920s excess and Hitler's Final Solution, Berlin's physical and symbolic landscape was an important staging ground for the highs and lows of modernity. In Cold War Berlin, social and politi

The Moral State
In the five years following the Worker's Uprising of 1953, the GDR government employed moral reform strategies to build a strong firmament for socialist transformation. It marshalled discourses of respectability and decency in the fight against sexual deviance, casting the traditional family as an important feature of social and political life. In the uranium-mining region of Saxony and Thuringia, a special wing of the district attorney's office,…

Although Germany's unconditional surrender swept away much of the political rubble of the Third Reich, the shattered physical and social geography of Berlin hampered official efforts to rebuild the former capital. In 1945 Berlin was divided into four sectors, each one occupied and administered by a different allied power—France, Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union. Though an integrated municipal council was established, parochial int…
