This article discusses the relevance of the flexible specialisation thesis in the context of existing small and intermediate enterprises. First, the concept is discussed, and a working definition is proposed. Woodworking enterprises in Mutare, Zimbabwe and Nakuru, Kenya are then analysed at the firm level and found to possess several of the characteristics suggested by the idea of flexible specialisation.
