Credentialing
Credentialing is defined first in its broader societal context, then in terms of its primary research locus in the sociology of education. The relative authority of third parties in producing credibility in social relationships of various kinds is critical to credentialing processes. The history of the sociological study of credentialing is traced through major theoretical and empirical contributions to the topic. Potential areas of future resear…

The Design of Aircraft Carriers Prior to World War II
The design and development of the early aircraft carriers has made great demands on the interdisciplinary teams charged with these tasks. Although the same basic principles have always operated, and will continue to do so for all ships of this class, they were difficult to apply first to ships converted to carry aircraft and later to the ships specifically designed for aircraft-carrying purposes. Here these difficulties are reviewed and the compr…
British Battleship Design 1840–1904
The growth in size of battleships during the latter half of the nineteenth century was unsteady and this is often portrayed as due to the irrational whims of admirals and naval architects. With few exceptions, this growth and the changes of style were the result of technical developments in metallurgy, propellants for guns, machinery and of the laws of naval architecture. Better materials, used more efficiently with a more informed selection of d…
