  • Investing in College Education

    Open Access•Ellen Messer-Davidow•ARTICLE•Humanities•2017

This paper argues that the magnitude of debt, high rates of default and forgiveness, and uncertain long-term repayment by borrowers facing lackluster job opportunities replicate the techniques of neoliberal financializat…

  • Kristen Hogan. The Feminist Bookstore Movement

    Ellen Messer-Davidow, Ellen Messer‐Davidow•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2017

The large and variegated literature of U.S. feminism, which stretches from the nineteenth century to the present, mostly appears in conventional genres such as reprinted movement documents, creative works, histories, sociologies, ethnographies, status studies, pedagogies, and interminable debates about theories and other discursive constructs. David R Shumway, Ellen Messer-Davidow et al.•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•1991•Cited by: 5

Only recently have we begun to think of the discipline as an historically specific form. We have, since Mannheim (1936) and the beginnings of sociology of knowledge, recognized the possibility that knowledge may be constituted on the basis of ideological positions or other interests. We have also been aware of the ways that certain social structures, such as the research university or professionalism, have organized knowledge-production. But it w…

It means to be shrewd and worldly-wise, to grasp the possibilities, to have the means of knowing, to be knowledgeable about methods, to pass into understanding. By conjoining knowledge and practice, it signifies knowing how to do somethi…

The methods of traditional literary study include differential, integral, principled, causal, inferential, and analogical thinking; they are employed to classify, interpret, and judge literary works. The methods of feminist literary study include specifying, patterning, and approximating systems that incl…
