  • Beating the App’ or Pyrrhic Victories? Gamification, Workaholism and FoMo in UK Food‐Delivery Platforms

Open Access•Cristian Santabarbara, Tony Royle et al.•ARTICLE•New Technology Work and Employment•2026•References: 59

This article examines the relationship between the gamification of platform food‐delivery work and workaholism. Drawing on a qualitative study, our findings suggest that while financial needs act as a ‘ push ’ factor, encouraging workers to enter off‐line platform work, gamification serves as a ‘ pull ’ factor ‐ driving an introjected motivation that draws couriers into the compulsive behaviours associated with workaholism. The more exposure that…

    Open Access•Tony Royle, Yvonne Rueckert•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2022•Cited by: 11•References: 30

This article examines the development of the UK 'Fast-Food Rights Campaign' and the formation of a collective identity amongst McDonald's UK workers. It illustrates how, despite an acquiescent and fragmented workforce, workers diagnostically frame (recognize, articulate and attribute) perceived injustices relating to their pay and working conditions. However, the main focus is on prognostic framing which brings people 'together' to find a 'consen…

  • Everything and nothing changes

    Open Access•Michelle O’Sullivan, Tony Royle•ARTICLE•Economic and Industrial Democracy•2014

Ireland’s selective system of collective agreed minimum wages has come under significant pressure in recent years. A new fast-food employer body took a constitutional challenge against the system of Joint Labour Committees (JLCs) and this was strengthened by the discourse on the negative effects of minimum wages as Ireland’s economic crisis worsened. Taking a historical institutional approach, the article examines the critical juncture for the JL…

  • The degradation of work and the end of the skilled emotion worker at Aer Lingus

    Open Access•Caitriona Curley, Tony Royle•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2013•Cited by: 16•References: 39

The article focuses on emotional labour and self-identity at the Irish-owned Aer Lingus airline from 1998 to 2008. It has been suggested that emotional labour is likely to be an increasingly important feature of frontline service jobs. However, in this case management has reduced the level of emotional labour requirement while work organization, recruitment policy and training have changed to focus on sales and lower labour costs, intensifying wo…

  • A new form of union organizing in Japan? Community unions and the case of the McDonald's 'McUnion

    Open Access•Tony Royle, Edson I Urano et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2012•Cited by: 6•References: 29

The article examines how and why a new independent trade union was established in McDonald's Japan in 2006. We discuss these developments both within the McDonald's 'system' and the broader context of the growth of community unions in the Japanese employment system. The findings suggest that the 'McUnion' could be seen as a new form of trade union organizing in Japan; unlike an enterprise union it is independent of the employer and recruits 'non-…

    Tony Royle•ARTICLE•Labor History•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 1

This article examines the employment practices of McDonald's and other US-owned multinational corporations (MNCs) in the global fast-food industry from the 1970s to date. It focuses on the impact that different host institutions have had on pay and working conditions in different countries in the industry. The author argues that US fast-food MNCs still adopt the underlying principles of their US practices, even if the practices themselves could n…
