  • Career insecurity and burnout complaints of young Dutch workers

Open Access•Rudi Wielers, Lisa Hummel et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Education & Work•2022

Burnout complaints among young workers in The Netherlands are high and increasing. Our research question is whether and how the high burn-out complaints of young workers in the Netherlands are associated with the employment relationships in the flexible labour market. We argue that especially an insecure career perspective contributes to burn-out complaints. Young workers in career jobs feel more insecure and this is a main reason why they have g…

  • Quality of work and job satisfaction

    Duncan Gallie, M Gebel et al.•ARTICLE•International Review of Sociology•2016•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 34

Adding to the debate on the integrative or marginalizing nature of female part-time work, this article provides a comparative analysis of the implications of female part-time work for different intrinsic job quality dimensions and job satisfaction. Drawing on national micro-data from Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden, our multivariate analyses show cross-national similarities in terms of lower job learning opportunities for female par…

  • Part-Time Work and Work Hour Preferences. An International Comparison

Rudi Wielers, Maria Münderlein et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2014•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 20

The goal of this article is to explain cross-country differences in over- and under-employment. The focus is on the effects of the growth of part-time work. We argue and demonstrate that the spread and acceptance of part-time work results in a downward adaptation of descriptive norms regulating work hours. Initially, women use part-time work to solve the Work-Family-Conflict. The increase of part-time work among women with children increases its …

  • Part-Time Work and Work Norms in the Netherlands

    Rudi Wielers, Dennis Raven•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2013•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 11

We argue that in the Netherlands, due to the growth of part-time work, work norms have declined. The mechanism behind this norm change is in the changed organization of family life. The increased labour market participation of women has put the traditional organization of family life under pressure. Working mothers in the Netherlands opt for part-time jobs, thus sacrificing career opportunities for family life. Working fathers also have to trade-…

  • Lower Educated Workers and Part-Time Work

    Open Access•Rudi Wielers, Peter Van Der Meer•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•2003•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 27

The thesis of the article is that strong growth in the number of part-time jobs in The Netherlands between 1973 and 1991 negatively affected the labour market participation of men, especially lower educated men. The thesis consists of a behavioural component, which explains why lower educated men are not attracted and do not gain access to part-time jobs, and an institutional component, which explains why the labour market position of lower educa…

  • The Increased Labour Market Participation of Dutch Students

Open Access•Peter Van Der Meer, Rudi Wielers•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2001•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 4

Since the beginning of the 1980s students' labour market participation in the Netherlands has increased enormously. The first part of this article offers a description of the changed labour market position of students in the Netherlands. It demonstrates that this is the result both of changes in the system of student financing and of an increased use of flexible staffing arrangements by employers. The second part of the paper concentrates on the …

  • Hierarchy, Wages and Firm Size

Open Access•Peter Van Der Meer Rudi Wielers, Peter Van Der Meer et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1998•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 20

The thesis of the paper is that the hierarchical structure of organizations contributes to the explanation of the well-known firm size-wage effect. A theoretical analysis elaborates why and how wages may depend on hierarchical position and span of control. It is argued that wage premiums for supervisors add to the explanation of the firm size-wage effect, but that an effect of span of control should not be expected. In empirical analyses, both hy…

  • The Wages of Trust

    Open Access•Rudi Wielers•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•1997•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

In this paper it is argued that the assumptions of the neoclassical and wage efficiency models do not adequately explain the governance structure of employment relationships. Trust may be a constituent element of at least some employment relationships, e.g. those of child minders. According to the tradition of research in social science, trust is established by gifts. It is argued that in employment relationships in which both employer and employ…
