  • William Penn and the peace of Europe

    W M S Russell•ARTICLE•Medicine Conflict & Survival•2004

The Quaker William Penn proposed a European Union to ensure peace in the continent in 1693. Penn was unusual among Quakers in being of the landed upper classes. When converted, he became a leader of the Quakers and other Dissenters. He had the two related ideals of peace and religious toleration, and dreamed of realizing both ideals in the New World. A practical idealist, he took advantage of four factors: friends at Court made through his social…

  • Population crises and population cycles

    Claire Russell, W M S Russell•ARTICLE•Medicine Conflict & Survival•2000

To prevent a population irretrievably depleting its resources, mammals have evolved a behavioural and physiological response to population crisis. When a mammalian population becomes dangerously dense, there is a reversal of behaviour. Co-operation and parental behaviour are replaced by competition, dominance and aggressive violence, leading to high mortality, especially of females and young, and a reduced population. The stress of overpopulation…

  • English Turf Mazes, Troy, and the Labyrinth

    W M S Russell, Claire Russell•ARTICLE•Folklore•1991

THE turf mazes of England have recently been the subject of brief discussions in The Countryman' and in FLS News.2 The time seemed ripe for a more lengthy treatment of the subject, with its rich background of traditional culture, and we shall attempt this in the present paper. The mighty space-liner descended majestically through the atmosphere, spurting before and beside her the puffs of flame that steadied her unerring course, loomed over the port, and settled with a splendid flourish upon a group of warehouses, which she totally incinerated, to land, swaying slightly at first, at a jaunty angle; when the dust and smoke had settled, the great ship seemed to preside over the port like a new and loftier tower of Pisa. …

MERMEN and mermaids are the subject of a large, varied, and virtually world-wide body of folklore.' They can be traced back to the Babylonian water-god Ea (Sumerian Enki) and the Levantine water-goddess Atargatis or Derceto.2 These may in turn have originated as totemic ancestorand ancestress-figures of clans with fish totems.3 The Babylonian water-god was described by the Babylonian historian Berossus (early third century B.C.) as a culture-hero…

    W M S Russell•REVIEW•Man•1972•Cited by: 1

In this book, Hans Kummer, one of the world's leading primate ethologists, examines the patterns of social interaction among primates. He examines this social behavior from the fundamentally biological viewpoint of evolutionary adaptation as part of the survival mechanisms for the species. Recognizing that all activity is constituted in part of genetic programming and in part of adaptive behavior, he explores the borderline area between the genet…
