Ffransis G. Payne, who died at the age of ninety-one on 21 August 1992, was born in Kington, Herefordshire, where his father, a native of Cardiff, had opened a draper's shop in 1898. His childhood was spent in this small Border town which he was later to describe so memorably in some of the essays in Chwaryddion Crwydrol ac Ysgrifau eraill. This volume, which brought him to the attention of the Welsh-reading public in 1943, was hailed as a new We…
Community Studies in Wales. An Overview
The author, after a brief discussion of their precursors, examines the community studies dealing with Wales which appeared before 1972. Alwyn D. Rees's pioneer study is analysed in terms of the historical and geographical scope of his findings. The four studies carried out by his students and published in a single volume reflect the use of varying sociological and social geographical approaches rather than a systematic development of the themes t…

The Recording of Past Social Conditions
Despite the widespread use of the tape recorder in the recording of oral tradition in its, ‘set’ forms (i.e. songs, rhymes, tales and standardised sayings), its usefulness as an aid in research into past social conditions has not, as yet, been fully realised. Its importance in this respect equals that of the camera, but its use presents several difficulties, for the material which it can record is inchoate, ephemeral and subjective. Given the cer…

West Glamorgan Customs
In the Swansea National Eisteddfod of 1907 two competitions were held for the best essays dealing with the folk lore of west Glamorgan. The practice of setting such competitions was begun at the Aberdare National Eisteddfod of 1885 when a prize for an essay on the Folk Lore of Glamorgan (published in the Eisteddfod Transactions for that year) was awarded to T. C. Evans (Cadrawd), the well-known Glamorgan antiquary and author of the History of Lla…
