  • Religion, Poetry and Compassion. On Józef Wittlin and Czesław Miłosz

    Open Access•Łukasz Tischner•ARTICLE•Konteksty Kultury•2025

The essay invites us to look at the poetry of Józef Wittlin and Czesław Miłosz, noting the religious potential of compassion as a response to the scandal of evil. Józef Wittlin – a soldier in First World War and later a victim of the anti-Semitic attacks – was particularly sensitive to the manifestations of cruelty and violence in the world. Likewise – fifteen years younger than Wittlin – Miłosz, who experienced first-hand the oppression of Nazi …

  • With Miłosz among Animals

    Łukasz Tischner•ARTICLE•The Polish Review•2025

Czesław Miłosz used to say that he is a failed naturalist. As a child, he raised various animals (including an eagle owl), studied flora and fauna, and later began reading Charles Darwin's followers. At the same time, he immersed himself in the arcana of hunting. As he explained, his infatuation with nature went through a crisis when he discovered that it was filled with pain and suffering, as it was regulated by the mechanism of natural selectio…

  • Harold Bloom i kotlety. Polemika z artykułem recenzyjnym Mariana Bieleckiego Gombrowicz w Argentynie

  • Adam Zagajewski. Poetry Talks to Philosophy – Initial Remarks

    Open Access•Łukasz Tischner•ARTICLE•Konteksty Kultury•2023

It is hard to believe that two years have already passed since Adam Zagajewski's death. We have become accustomed to the remarkable regularity with which he published his volumes of poetry and essays. In Krakw, he still took part in literary and artistic events -and not always as their protagonist, very often as a listener, who was fascinated by all manifestations of a "spiritual life, " to use a term, admittedly unfashionable, and yet so dear to h…

  • The Poet Discovers Sources (of the Self ). Adam Zagajewski and Charles Taylor

    Open Access•Łukasz Tischner•ARTICLE•Konteksty Kultury•2023

The article shows Adam Zagajewski’s relationship with Charles Taylor’s thought. The author argues that the poet’s dialogue with the philosopher is not limited to quotations and direct references but is also revealed at a deeper level. Based on Zagajewski’s essays and interviews, the author concludes that the poet studied Sources of the Self and The Ethics of Authenticity, and probably also drew on later works dealing with the condition of religio…

  • Sekrety literatury i głód wtajemniczenia

    Open Access•Łukasz Tischner•ARTICLE•Przestrzenie Teorii•2023

This article concerns secrets and secrecy in narrative works. The author, following in the footsteps of Auerbach and Kermode, argues that secrets should be understood as discontinuous places, gaps that demand to be filled. Auerbach and Kermode pointed to the biblical origins of the secret narrative. The latter in The Genesis of Secrecy. On the Interpretation of Narrative noted that secrets presuppose a mode of initiation – this was the case in th…

  • Solaris, Grabiński i Schopenhauer. Podróż do źródeł wyobraźni Lema

    Open Access•Łukasz Tischner•ARTICLE•Konteksty Kultury•2022

Solaris należy do kanonu gatunku fantastyki naukowej, a ściśle do jej wersji wykorzystującej motyw kontaktu z obcym.

Translation as a Test of Assent: Stanisław Barańczak’s Poem Five Postcards from and to Emily Dickinson Stanisław Barańczak is well known not only as a poet, but also as an extremely prolific translator who became famous for translating the works of Shakespeare and British and American poets. In the 1980s, just before and immediately after his forced political emigration to the United States, he extensively translated religious poets (e.g. ‘metaph…

  • Was Gombrowicz the First Postsecularist

    Łukasz Tischner•ARTICLE•The Polish Review•2015•References: 1

In this article, based on my recent book Gombrowicza milczenie o Bogu (Gombrowicz’s silence about God),1 I demonstrate the essence of Witold Gombrowicz’s singularity, as well as the paradox of his attitude with regard to religion. The subject is of interest insofar as the author often passed over it in silence, though it was crucial to his worldview—all the more so in that it allows us to speak of the originality of his thought. Gombrowicz liked …
