  • Implementation Outcomes of the National Skin Smart Campus Initiative Among Young Adults

Open Access•David Pérez, David L Perez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Young adults often underuse ultraviolet radiation (UVR) protective strategies and engage in indoor tanning, heightening lifetime skin cancer risk. The national Skin Smart Campus (SSC) initiative encourages universities to adopt policies that reduce UVR exposure. We evaluated a 6-month SSC university campaign using an independent-samples pre-post design with surveys before (N = 230) and after (N = 267) implementation. The campaign included SSC des…

  • Mental Health Professionals’ Views on Artificial Intelligence as an Aide for Children Anticipating or Suffering the Loss of a Parent to Cancer: Helpful or Harmful

Open Access•Mary Rose Yockel, Marcelo M Sleiman et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2025

Purpose : Assess mental health professionals' attitudes regarding the timing and characteristics of therapeutic interventions for children whose parents have incurable cancer, and whether professionals would use artificial intelligence (AI) in these interventions. Methods : Professionals were surveyed about their therapeutic approaches to caring for children when parents have incurable cancer under different scenarios. Data from N = 294 (69% male…

  • Sun protection, sunburn, tanning, and family factors among melanoma survivors and their minor children

    Open Access•Yelena P Wu, Tammy K Stump et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2025•References: 29

Use of recommended sun protection strategies among minor children of melanoma survivors is suboptimal and as a result, these children receive excess ultraviolet radiation exposure that further increases their melanoma risk. Among a sample of 368 melanoma survivor-child dyads, the relationship between family-focused factors and child sun protection and related outcomes was examined, as well as the relations of family factors with individual sun-pr…

  • Moderating influences on parents' fatalistic beliefs about cancer and their association with sun safety behaviors among children of melanoma survivors: Implications for treatment

    Open Access•Yelena P Wu, Kenneth P Tercyak et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2024•References: 30

The purpose of this study is to examine the association between parents' fatalism about melanoma and their children's sun protection, and the potential moderating role of parent-child communication. In this observational study of N = 69 melanoma-surviving parents of children ages 8-17, parents reported on their own melanoma fatalism, as well as their children's sun safety behaviors and parent-child discussion about sun safety. Parent gender, fami…

  • Tailored Mobile Messaging Intervention for Waterpipe Tobacco Cessation in Young Adults: A Randomized Trial

Darren Mays, Andrea C Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2021•References: 49

Objectives. To test a tailored mobile health (i.e., mHealth) intervention for waterpipe tobacco cessation in young adults. Methods. From 2018 to 2020 at 2 US sites, we conducted a randomized trial with 349 waterpipe tobacco smokers aged 18 to 30 years randomized to control (no intervention), untailored, or tailored intervention arms. Intervention arms received a 6-week mHealth intervention conveying risks of waterpipe tobacco through text and ima…

  • Tobacco Use Experimentation, Physical Activity, and Risk of Depression Among Multiethnic Urban Preadolescents

Open Access•Cassandra A Stanton, Krista B Highland et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2015

Children with low socioeconomic status and ethnic minorities experience disproportionate risk of elevated depressive symptoms. This study examines the effects of risk/protective factors for depressive symptoms among multiethnic urban preadolescents. Eighth graders ( N = 463; 34% African American, 29% Hispanic, 17% White, and 20% Other/Mixed; 23% born outside of the United States) completed surveys at two urban public middle schools serving low-in…

  • Framing Indoor Tanning Warning Messages to Reduce Skin Cancer Risks Among Young Women: Implications for Research and Policy

    Darren Mays, Kenneth P Tercyak•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 47

Objectives. We investigated the impact of indoor tanning device warnings that communicate the risks associated with indoor tanning (i.e., loss framed) or the benefits of avoiding indoor tanning (i.e., gain framed). Methods. A convenience sample of non-Hispanic White women aged 18 to 30 years who tanned indoors at least once in the past year (n = 682) participated in a within-subjects experiment. Participants completed baseline measures and report…

  • Women’s concerns about the emotional impact of awareness of heritable breast cancer risk and its implications for their children

    Open Access•Suzanne C O’Neill, Darren Mays et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Genetics•2014

  • Are Adolescents with ADHD Interested in Genetic Testing for Nicotine Addiction Susceptibility

Open Access•Linda J Herbert, Linda Herbert et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2010

It has been well-established that some adolescents diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk for cigarette smoking. Current research on the genetic basis of this association could ultimately translate into genetic tests capable of identifying smoking-prone adolescents with ADHD. In this study we examined 81 ADHD affected adolescents' (age 13-21) interest in genetic testing for nicotine addiction suscepti…

  • High School Seniors’ Smoking Initiation and Progression 1 Year After Graduation

Kenneth P Tercyak, Dalia Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 18

We explored cigarette smoking prevalence rates in former high school seniors 1 year after graduation and found that among 12th grade never smokers, 25% initiated smoking, and among 12th grade ever smokers, 39% increased their cigarette use. Alcohol use in 12th grade, along with not attending college, were both positively related to smoking progression. Risk for smoking initiation does not end at adolescence, and the public health community must c…
