  • Intellectuals and Fields of Power: Towards a Reflexive Sociology of Academics’ Interventions

Hager Ben Jaffel, Valentin Behr et al.•ARTICLE•Political anthropological…•2026

This collective paper launches a running theme on scholarly interventions in fields of power, proposing a reflexive sociology of the “grey zone” between scholarship, expertise, and activism, and illustrating through two contrasting cases—Georgakakis’s patient insider strategy in the Horizon Europe process and Vauchez’s high-profile outsider intervention through the T-Dem—the structurally different pathways, capitals, and limits that characterize …

  • Pierre Bourdieu as I Remember Him

    Niilo Kauppi•ARTICLE•SOCIOLOGIA E RICERCA SOCIALE•2022•References: 1

This portrait of Bourdieu's laboratory in the early days describes the impact of the bourdieusian «tribe» on the author's social destiny, especially to his attempt to develop a reflexive political sociology that explores the intertwinement of culture, power, and knowledge. Repeatedly, he depicts himself as an outsider suspended between several (geographical, disciplinary, and intellectual) worlds. Without directly addressing the issue of self-obj…

  • Waiting for Godot? On some of the obstacles for developing counter-forces in higher education

    Niilo Kauppi•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2019•References: 2

In the name of the imperatives of the knowledge-economy, the European public university has been under attack since the beginning of the 2000s. Everywhere in Europe, budgets have been cut and departments considered as being useless eliminated. Reactions have been weak. How can this be explained? How can one challenge the dominant discourse on higher education? This article explores some of the power dynamics that prevent alternative visions from …

  • Rethinking Politicisation

    Open Access•Kari Palonen, Кари Палонен et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Political Theory•2019•Cited by: 32•References: 52

Politicisation, in a broad and basic understanding, means to turn something – an issue, an institution, a policy – that previously was not a subject to political action into something that now is subject to political action. So far, most definitions of the concept would agree. But besides this basic approach, there is much discussion: Politicisation is a concept that is currently much used in the social sciences, and also a concept that is contes…

  • Exit politics, enter politicization

Niilo Kauppi, Claudia Wiesner•ARTICLE•Journal of European Integration•2018•Cited by: 13•References: 3

A growing number of recent empirical studies such as the four contributions discussed here examine the politicization of the European Union, Europe, European integration or European governance. Two general research questions mark this emerging research field. A first one is how to theorize and conceptualize the politicization of the European Union (EU) and the reasons behind it. Does politicization have to do with a decline in EU support or Euros…

  • The Politification and Politicisation of the EU

    Open Access•Niilo Kauppi, Кари Палонен et al.•ARTICLE•Redescriptions Political Thought…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 9

In this article, we suggest a novel conceptual framework for understanding and analysing EU politicisation. Recent studies on EU politicisation argue that the post-Maastricht era led to the politicisation of EU integration via an increasing citizens’ dissatisfaction. Contrary to this account, we argue that European integration has been from the beginning linked to politicisation, but in an unusual way. To capture its uniqueness we introduce the c…

  • Global Bourdieu

Niilo Kauppi, David Swartz et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2015•Cited by: 3

Pierre Bourdieu was a prolific scholar whose multifaceted work inspired research in a wide variety of areas. Beyond sociology we find his influence in anthropology, history, cultural studies, political science, and international relations. Particularly after 1995, when he engaged in a fight against neo-liberalism, he became the pre-eminent public intellectual. Bourdieu clearly stands in the pantheon of the greatest contemporary social scientists.…

This article examines the intensification, since the creation of the so-called Shanghai list of world universities in June 2003, of a political struggle in which a variety of actors, universities, national governments, and, more recently, supranational institutions have sought to define global higher education. This competition over global higher education has highlighted issues such as the internationalization and denationalization of higher edu…
