  • Dilemmas and Paradoxes in Linguistic Fieldwork

    Open Access•Jorgen Rischel•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual Meeting…•2002

The retrieval of data was never an issue that loomed large in standard textbooks on linguistics. It remained rather peripheral, even to scholars with a long experience in approaching linguistic data. Introductory textbooks teaching morphological or syntactic analysis are often very bad in this respect: they tend to depict raw data as a set of carefully selected and flawlessly transcribed forms. Thus they create a dangerous illusion in the minds o…

    Jorgen Rischel•ARTICLE•Acta Linguistica Hafniensia•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 1

It is unusual for international journals to publish reviews of an introductory textbook written in a »small« language like Danish The textbook reviewed here is, however, significant both by presenting a comprehensive overview of contemporary Danish phonetics-phonology and by doing this in a theoretically interesting format It should be noted m passing that among Western languages Danish is second only to English in its post-medieval tradition of …

  • Small’ languages and their speakers

    Open Access•Jorgen Rischel•ARTICLE•European Review•1999

This article illustrates some of the challenges faced in trying to do research on little-known languages, particularly tribal languages. It refutes the widespread stereotype that tribal people share a ‘primitive’ language type. Functional bilingualism or even multilingualism is a natural feature of tribal communities. The question may be raised whether mastery of alternative languages promotes language death. A comparison is made with ‘small’ lan…

  • Minor Mlabri: A Hunter-Gatherer Language of Northern Indochina

    Lawrence A Reid, Jorgen Rischel•ARTICLE•Oceanic Linguistics•1996

The language described in this monograph is spoken by a small hilltribe in Northern Indochina. Its existence has attracted considerable attention because of the legendary and intriguing primitiveness of the Mlabri or 'Spirits of the Yellow Leaves', as they are traditionally called, but reliable information about the cultural heritage and particularly the language is sparse. This is true in particular of an ethnic subgroup whose culture and langua…

    Jorgen Rischel•ARTICLE•Acta Linguistica Hafniensia•1971

"Ergativity"Footnote 2 is one of the syntactic characteristics of the Eskimo languages. It is reflected in the surface representation of sentences by a difference in case marking between transitive and intransitive sentences, the former being related in form to possessive constructions. I am grateful to John R. Ross, David Perlmutter, and Knut Bergsland for their valuable, critical comments to a very preliminary sketch of certain parts of the pre…
