  • There’s (not) an App for that: Situating smartphones, Excel and the techno-political interfaces and infrastructures of digital solutions for Covid-19

Open Access•Luke Heemsbergen, Crystal M Bennett et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

This paper focuses on the operational-infrastructural puzzles of mHealth via COVID-19 Contact Tracing Apps (CTA). Significant literature exists on user adoption of the platformisation of public health during the pandemic, but there has been limited consideration of how those responsible for implementing CTA design, deployment, and use of public health infrastructures did so. We redress this imbalance by exploring some of the politics and practica…

  • Becoming a Culturally Responsible Music Teacher: A Grounded Theory

Crystal M Bennett, Catherine Bennett•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Council for…•2025•References: 21

Culturally responsible music teaching refers to practices of meaningfully connecting with students, engaging them in their own constructions of knowledge and art, and opening their minds to diverse potentials. This study concerns the ways that music teachers develop such pedagogical pillars across their lives and careers. I selected a constructivist grounded theory methodology to examine music teacher development as a complex, detailed process. D…

  • Magnitude and determinants of excess total, age-specific and sex-specific all-cause mortality in 24 countries worldwide during 2020 and 2021: Results on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic from the C-…

Open Access•Chryso Th Pallari, Souzana Achilleo et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2024

INTRODUCTION: To examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mortality, we estimated excess all-cause mortality in 24 countries for 2020 and 2021, overall and stratified by sex and age. METHODS: Total, age-specific and sex-specific weekly all-cause mortality was collected for 2015-2021 and excess mortality for 2020 and 2021 was calculated by comparing weekly 2020 and 2021 age-standardised mortality rates against expected mortality, estimated b…

  • Techno-Political Promises of Pandemic Management: A Situation of Apps and Excel in Public Health

Open Access•Monique Mann, Luke Heemsbergen et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2023

This article considers the politics and practicalities of responding to the COVID crisis with ‘an app for that’. It shows how seductive solutionism in times of crisis created political impetus to direct the public health response to contact tracing through Contact Tracing Apps (CTA). Rather than focus on user-based concerns (uptake, privacy, etc.), we’ve investigated how apps interface with complex systems and infrastructures of public health. Ou…

  • Pandemic policing and the construction of publics: An analysis of Covid-19 lockdowns in public housing

    Open Access•P Kelaita, Kiran Pienaar et al.•ARTICLE•Health Sociology Review•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 21

COVID-19 responses have cast a spotlight on the uneven impacts of public health policy with particular populations or sites targeted for intervention. Perhaps the starkest example in Australia was the 'hard' lockdown of nine public housing complexes in inner-city Melbourne from 4 to 18 July 2020, where residents were fully confined to their homes. These complexes are home to diverse migrant communities and the lockdown drew public criticism for u…

  • Premature mortality attributable to Covid-19: Potential years of life lost in 17 countries around the world, January–August 2020

Open Access•Maider Pagola Ugarte, Souzana Achilleo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Our results highlight the role of PYLL as a tool to understand the impact of COVID-19 on demographic groups within and across countries, guiding preventive measures to protect these groups under the ongoing pandemic. Continuous monitoring of PYLL is therefore needed to better understand the burden of COVID-19 in terms of premature mortality

  • Tackling student drinking within the drinking subculture of a university sports competition: A culture change approach

Open Access•Robyn Ramsden, Delwyn Hewitt et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education•2021

Purpose This paper explores the impact of a suite of alcohol culture change interventions implemented by Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. The interventions were designed to change the alcohol culture at a bi-annual nation-wide university multi-sport competition known as Uni Nationals. This study aims to understand the critical success factors of the alcohol culture change initiatives that were developed by the university and implemented…

  • Implementation salvage experiences from the Melbourne diabetes prevention study

Open Access•Joyce Dunbar, James Dunbar et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

The experiences of conducting such a novel trial as the preliminary Melbourne Diabetes Prevention Study have been invaluable. The lessons learnt and knowledge gained will inform the future execution of this trial in the coming years. We anticipate that these results will also be beneficial to other researchers conducting similar trials in the public health field. We recommend that researchers openly share their experiences, barriers and challenge…

  • A post-contact Aboriginal mortuary tree from southwestern Victoria, Australia

Thomas Richards, Crystal M Bennett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2012•References: 20

Here we document the investigation of the first Australian Aboriginal mortuary tree found since the early 20th century and the first studied by archaeologists and Aboriginal traditional owners. In 2001, a landowner discovered Aboriginal skeletal remains inside a fallen, dead tree while evaluating the tree’s potential as firewood, leading to the investigation of the site. The tree was located near Moyston, in southwestern Victoria, in traditional …
