  • These papers had too many memories. So I burned them’: Holocaust diaries, diarists, and their afterlives

    Kathryn Sederberg•ARTICLE•Holocaust Studies•2026•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Diaries have long been considered crucial sources for documenting the fate of European Jews during the Holocaust. However, unlike retrospective accounts, Holocaust diaries are often published by individuals other than the author. This article examines the publication history of Holocaust diaries in English translation, and how the transition from private text to public artifact is framed by editors and family members in prefaces, afterwords, and …

  • Fleeing Nazi Persecution: Jewish Refugee Child Diarists as Family Chroniclers

    Open Access•Kathryn Sederberg•ARTICLE•International Research in…•2024

This article examines the diaries of young Jewish refugees who documented their emigration from Germany and Austria in the 1930s and who wrote for family members, imagining future readers of their accounts. These diaries offer unique access to children's voices during the Holocaust, showing how some child refugees became family chroniclers, self-consciously documenting a story of Jewish resistance and survival, as well as a tragedy of loss. Their…

  • Reconstructing the Self and the City: Wolfgang Koeppen's Rubble Film Bei Betty (1946–1948)

    Open Access•Kathryn Sederberg•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•2020

This article discusses Wolfgang Koeppen's to date unpublished screenplay Bei Betty (ca. 1948) and makes a case for its importance both within Koeppen's oeuvre and as an artifact of postwar German culture that helps us understand the category of the Trümmerfilm as well as the complexity of the “zero hour.” In contrast to other rubble films, Bei Betty portrays postwar reconstruction ( Wiederaufbau ) as an ambivalent process, allowing some individua…

  • Journaling Displacement. Jewish Refugee Accounts 1933-1945

Kathryn Sederberg•ARTICLE•Revue belge de philologie et d…•2020

As Nazi persecution of Jews intensified in the 1930s and 40s, many Jewish Germans sought to save their lives through emigration from continental Europe. Their journeys are meticulously documented in hundreds of diaries written by a broad spectrum of society. This article argues that the practice of diary writing had an important function in survival, as the diary helped refugees gain a sense of agency as survivornarrators of their stories of esca…

  • Writing through Crisis: Time, History, Futurity in German Diaries of the Second World War

    Kathryn Sederberg•ARTICLE•Biography•2017

This article considers how diary writing mediates temporal consciousness, especially during periods of crisis. Through examples of German civilian diaries written at the end of the Second World War, I show how diaries reflect changing notions of history and futurity, producing radically presentist modes of self-representation

  • An Emotional State: The Politics of Emotion in Postwar West German Culture

    Kathryn Sederberg•ARTICLE•German History•2016

In scholarship on the immediate postwar period, German emotionality (or rather, the lack thereof) has been a centre point of concern, underpinning many of the period’s key tropes. Some of the accusations have become well known: a ‘general lack of emotion’ (Hannah Arendt), the ‘silent German people’ with a ‘faculty for self-anesthesia’ (W.G. Sebald) and the German ‘inability to mourn’ (Alexander and Margarete Mitscherlich). It was the Mitscherlich…
