Academic experience of temporal governance in an in-house online program manager
Increasingly, public universities are partnering with online program managers (OPMs) to develop and deliver online courses. These partnerships are characteristic of academic capitalism (Connell) and, as such, provide case studies for investigating ways of working for academic staff in the corporate university (Ludwig). This research focus aims to contribute to the limited work undertaken on the experiences of academic staff, especially their expe…

Micro-credentials: A Postdigital Counternarrative
Alternative credentials, such as micro credentials and digital badges, are increasingly being developed in universities. Primarily aimed at employability, these credentials are being scrutinised as it is argued that they are surrounded by ‘great uncertainty’. We contribute to this scrutiny by examining the forms of subjectivity that result from micro-credentials. We argue that, in their current form, they tend to result in a neoliberal subject. P…

The World of Spirits in the Work of Some Caribbean Writers in the Diaspora
Writers of Caribbean ancestry who live outside of the region are usually described as having dual allegiance (Caribbean/American for example). This is eminently justifiable, since there is usually a recognizable Caribbean flavour to the writing. This paper focuses on one feature of Caribbean culture incorporated in three texts: Praisesong for the Widow, by Paule Marshall, who grew up in a Barbadian environment in Brooklyn, New York; Flickering Sh…
Home Space: Youth Identification in the Greek Diaspora
This article draws on a larger study on schooling and diaspora using the case of the Greek community of Melbourne, Australia to examine processes of identification of young people with access to minority cultures. The Melbourne Greek community is long-standing, diverse, and well-established. Because of this, the young people involved in this study provide insights into cultural processes not related in any direct sense to migration. In most cases…
Writing Bridges of Sound: Praise Song for the Widow and Louisiana
Whenever Caribbean artists have written they have, in some way or other, written the Black Diaspora. It is an inescapable part of their historical/cultural mindscape. Africa, The Americas, Europe are bound together by bands initiated by Columbus with his three ships and extended and held firm by various historical formulations (the British Empire for example). The Trans Atlantic Slave Trade is the backdrop against which Caribbean and indeed all o…
Being a 'wog' in Melbourne - young people's self-fashioning through discourses of racism
The Greek community in Melbourne, Australia, is large and has a long history in the city. It is diverse and associated with a range of cultural, social and political structures. It has strong transnational links and in many ways exemplifies ‘diasporic’ in contradistinction to ‘migrant’. This paper focuses on young people from this community, particularly those who attend schools established to promote Greek language and cultural maintenance. In t…

Woman and family in the African diaspora—mother and the sewing machine in Caribbean literature
‘... Miss Caroline tell me how you spend your time I spend all my time around the Singer machine...’ These lines from a popular song of the nineteen forties sum up what was for many women a new reality. This paper identifies the space at the sewing machine as mother's space and the sewing machine as an important element in the psychological and financial liberation of the woman, here the Caribbean woman of the twentieth century. Evidence in suppo…
