Early Maya architectural innovation at Cuello, Belize
While Classic Maya architecture has long been famed, its origins are obscure. Excavations at the Preclassic site of Cuello, Belize, have yielded a sequence of buildings for the period between 1000 BC and AD 400, which demonstrates the transformation of a domestic compound into a ceremonial precinct.
