The Dawson Cut Forest Bed in the Fairbanks area, Alaska, is about two million years old☆
The Dawson Cut Forest Bed lies in the lower part of thick, late Cenozoic loess deposits in the Fairbanks area. It is associated with several distal tephra beds that provide age control and offer the opportunity of its recognition elsewhere in central Alaska. EC tephra (named herein) occurs in the uppermost part of the Dawson Cut Forest Bed and its petrographic and chemical properties point to a co-magmatic relationship with PA tephra, which has n…
Age of Sheep Creek Tephra (Pleistocene) in Central Alaska from Thermoluminescence Dating of Bracketing Loess
The age of the Sheep Creek tephra (SCt), a widespread marker ash bed in eastern Alaska and western Yukon Territory, has been ambiguous and controversial. We have obtained three reliable thermoluminescence age estimates from bracketing loess near Fairbanks that imply a deposition age of about 190,000 ± 20,000 yr for SCt. Three of six loess samples near and closely bracketing the SCt beds near Fairbanks yielded younger age estimates (∼117,000 and ∼…
Radiocarbon Dates and Late-Quaternary Stratigraphy from Mamontova Gora, Unglaciated Central Yakutia, Siberia, U.S.S.R.
A fine exposure of perennially frozen ice-rich silt and associated flora and vertebrate fauna of late-Quaternary age exists at Mamontova Gora along the Aldan River in central Yakutia, Siberia, U.S.S.R. The silt deposit caps a 50-m-high terrace and consists of three units. An upper layer 1–2 m thick overlies a 10–15-m-thick brownish to black silt layer. The lower silt layer is greenish to gray and about 15 m thick. All the silt is well sorted with…
Cryoplanation Terraces: Indicators of a Permafrost Environment
Cryoplanation terraces are bedrock steps or terraces on ridge crests and hilltops. The tread or “flat” area is 10 to several hundred meters wide and long and slopes from 1 to 5° parallel to the ridge crests. Terrace scarps may be from 1 to 75 m high. Terraces are cut into all bedrock types and are best developed on closely jointed, fine-grained bedrock. The scarps and treads are covered with frost-rived rubble 1 to 2 m thick. The rubble on treads…

University of Alaska Gulkana Glacier Expedition 1961
Glaciological studies initiated during the summer of 1960 on Gulkana Glacier in the central Alaska Range by members of the Department of Geology, University of Alaska, were continued during the summer of 1961. ... The two-man field parties, each led by a graduate student of the University of Alaska, were in the field from June 1 to September 1. The two field parties made, respectively, a detailed ablation study and a study of the surface motion. …

The Geological Approach to Dating Archaeological Sites
Abasic Question that must be answered for any archaeological site is, how old is it? Although some archaeological sites can be dated on the basis of archaeological correlations alone and although dendrochronological (Giddings, 1952, pp. 105-110) and radiocarbon methods give absolute ages for other sites, many sites can be dated only by methods based on the geologists’ knowledge of geographic and climatic changes during the last few tens of thousa…
