Non-verbal predications in Zarma
This article presents new findings in the use of copulas nôo ‘be’ and ti ‘be’ in non-verbal predications in Zarma (Songhay; Niger, Nigeria). Based on some exclusive contexts of use and some morphosyntactic criteria, the article distinguishes a basic type of predication with one term “NP + nôo” used in deictic identification (e. g.: Abdù nôo ‘it’s Abdu’) and a type of predication with two terms “NP1 + NP2 + nôo” used in nominal predications and eq…
Carlos Benítez-Torres, A grammar of Tagdal
Le livre de Carlos Benítez-Torres est une description grammaticale du tagdal (songhay) avec un aperçu sur la situation sociolinguistique de la langue et les rapports entre ses locuteurs et les communautés touarègues voisines. Selon l’auteur, le tagdal désigne deux variétés très proches parlées par les Igdalen et les Iberogan en République du Niger. Il fait partie de la famille des langues songhay, qui elle-même serait une branche de la grande fam…
Les variations en hausa chez les locuteurs natifs

One-term predication for deictic identification in Hausa
This article describes a type of non-verbal predication (NVP) with a single term called "deictic identification" (for example, Abdù nee 'it’s Abdu') and which, in its basic function, is used to identify a referent present in the immediate spatial environment of the speaker. The paper shows that the one-term sentences must be distinguished from ordinary two-term specificational or equative sentences (for example, ùban Muusaa Abdù nèe 'Musa’s fathe…
La particule emphatique tun ‘dès’ en haoussa
Cet article affirme que la particule tun en haoussa, contrairement aux caractérisations antérieures, ne signifie pas ‘depuis’, mais a un sens temporel emphatique plus proche de la particule "dès" en français. Cette nouvelle caractérisation rend compte des usages connus et moins connus de tun, et est conforme au fait que tun n'a pas directement développé un usage spatial ou causal, contrairement aux vraies particules signifiant ‘depuis’, en haouss…
Perfectivity and time reference in Hausa
The relative marking in Hausa marks discourse presupposition in perfective and imperfective relative clauses and out-of-focus clauses of focus and fronted wh-questions. However, the Relative Perfective also appears in storyline narrative clauses and various accounts try to find a common feature between relative clauses and narrative context. This paper rejects the common feature approach to Hausa relative marking and presents a systematic grammat…
Distance and Visibility
The current standard account of Hausa deixis claims that Hausa has a linear person-based system with the following four locative adverbs and their interpretations: nân 'here', nan 'there near you', cân 'there away from you and me', and can 'over there away from you and me'. This paper shows that in fact one may need two separate deictic systems for Hausa to account for all relevant data. The first system is based on distance with a primary proxim…
Profiling and identification in Hausa
Existential and possessive predications in Hausa
The functions of the Hausa particle dà are, among others, an existential predicate, a comitative preposition, and a coordination conjunction. It is also used in the main possessive ‘have’ predication in combination with the copula nàa ‘be at’. In previous accounts, this possessive construction is said to have the structure [possessor is with possessed] or [possessor is (somewhere) with possessed], thus taking the particle dà in this construction …
