Help-Seeking Behaviours Among Conflict-Affected Men who Misuse Alcohol in Ukraine
Since 2014, conflict and violence in Ukraine, including the Russian annexation of Crimea and the ongoing war, have led to significant internal displacement, affecting millions of people. This humanitarian crisis has exacerbated psychological distress, with high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and suicide among internally displaced persons, military veterans, and civilians. Alcohol misuse has emerged as a prevalent ma…
Explanatory models and coping with alcohol misuse among conflict-affected men in Ukraine
Affecting nearly 10% of men globally, alcohol use disorders (AUDs) represent a significant public health burden. Existing work, including from Ukraine, suggests that living in conflict settings may exacerbate the risk of AUDs. However, there is a dearth of evidence regarding alcohol misuse, as well as knowledge of factors associated with alcohol misuse patterns, in conflict settings. The aim of this qualitative study was to investigate explanator…
The added benefit of including cognitive coping in brief psychosocial interventions
Psychosocial programs in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) often omit cognitive strategies due to perceived difficulty for clients and lay providers. We evaluated the benefit of including “cognitive coping” in a brief, online intervention for conflict-affected Ukrainian veterans and family members with mild to moderate psychosocial distress. Participants were randomized to two treatment conditions based on the Common Elements Treatment Appr…
Common strategies in empirically supported psychological interventions for alcohol use disorders
Process evaluations of mental health and psychosocial support interventions for populations affected by humanitarian crises
The current state of process evaluations in MHPSS RCTs is heterogeneous. The quality of process evaluations should be improved to strengthen implementation science of the growing number of evidence-informed MHPSS interventions
Global mental health

A randomized-controlled trial of community-based transdiagnostic psychotherapy for veterans and internally displaced persons in Ukraine
Standard CETA is more effective than brief CETA, but brief CETA also had significant effects compared with wait-controls. Given demonstrated effectiveness, CETA could be scaled up as an effective community-based approach
Experiences of mental health and functioning among conflict-affected populations
Findings suggest a need for community-based programming that facilitates social adaptation, supports social network building, and helps engage conflict-affected people into mental health services. Programs that promote greater awareness, interaction, and understanding among the general public, military veterans, and IDPs are also warranted. A Complex Intervention for Alcohol Misuse Among Conflict-Affected Populations in Uganda and Ukraine
Qualitative research is increasingly being integrated within the development and evaluation phases of trials of complex health interventions. Qualitative research can complement effectiveness data and provide insights around how context and implementation impact the results of the trial and to what extent interventions fit implementation contexts after evaluation. Several qualitative studies have been conducted at different stages of trials of me…
Adaptation and testing of an assessment for mental health and alcohol use problems among conflict-affected adults in Ukraine
The findings support the reliability and validity of the assessment-the MHAI-for screening of common mental health problems among Ukrainian IDPs and veterans. Use of IRT shortened the instrument to improve practicality and potential sustainability
